🦉 The Eurasian three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus)

  • Picoides picus (lat.) woodpecker, -oides similar
  • tridactylus tridaktylos (Greek) three-toed

This northern taiga species of woodpecker differs significantly from its woodpecker brothers. It has no red color in its plumage, either on the undertail or on the head. The male has a yellow cap on its bare feet, while females lack it.

Their behavior is also different. For some reason, this species inspects trees no higher than two meters, that is, only from below. And of course, as you can guess from the name, they have only three toes on each foot.
