There are many applications springing up to trace the spread of the coronavirus. This, of course, raises privacy concerns among many in the public.
When companies such as Microsoft, Apple, and Google start getting involved, this gets the hairs on the privacy advocate's necks standing up. It tends to be a bad situation in terms of privacy.
This has spurred some advocates to spring into action.
Switzerland's Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), has confirmed that it's working with a group of prominent European privacy experts to develop a decentralized coronavirus contact tracing app by May 11.
According to the project’s whitepaper, the DP-PPT protocol enables Bluetooth-based coronavirus contact tracing without compromising users’ privacy, and would would also prevent governments from misusing the data after the global pandemic dies down.
The virus is becoming a convenient reason for governments to ramp up surveillance on its citizens. This has turned into a major power grab by governments and mega-corporations.
The hope is that decentralized applications can provide the necessary data while not compromising people's privacy. This is especially relevant after the pandemic ends. Governments will not give back the power once they grab it.
