Hello everyone
Christmas in the air, it's Christmas season and I hope you all are having great time, it's a time of the year when we all celebrate the season with our family, friends and love ones, most people had to travel from one place to another to enjoy the long break from work or school, Christmas is always unique and the love we share is so sweet amongst ourselves. I will be sharing with you today the making of this simple and beautiful Christmas outfit of a traditional iro and buba I made for our grandma.
As you all know this is a time when we share gift amongst ourselves and this is why one of our uncle decided to gift grandma this beautiful African print fabric as a Christmas gift along side with other gift items well, as a gift, we didn't need to let grandma know since it was meant to be a surprise, I was contacted as her seamstress if the fabric should be given to grandma before sewing or it would be better to sew it and presented it to her, then I advised that the fabric should be given to her since she's in the best position to know what to do with it, and it was done, grandma was so happy to receive the gift items and prayed for my uncle.
I was given the fabric and grandma told me to make this traditional outfit of iro and buba for her, one thing about grandma is that all her expensive fabric are usually styled in this traditional outfit that she can wear occasionally as it is best admire amongst the aged women and older people, I did just what grandma wanted and the outcome was so nice and beautiful.
The wrapper is the iro while the blouse is the buba that is how it's been called and best known it is a traditional outfit in the Western part of Nigeria.
Join me as I take you through the cutting and sewing process.
From the 6yards African print fabric, I cut out 2yards and 8" for the wrapper which is the iro and it was folded at the two sides with a rope sewn to the tip of both sides to tie at the back and to make it firm.
For the blouse which is the buba, I folded the fabric in 4 using the hip circumference measurement divid by 4 plus 1" with the full length of 28" making sure the shoulder and the center front are closed since there will be no joining at the shoulder.
All I did was to cut out the neck line of 3.5 x 4"
Since the blouse has extended to the sleeves, I cut out the sleeves subtracting the extension with the wideness of 10"
The sleeves were sewn to both sides of the blouse with the hem folded in by 1" and the side were sewn together with the side seam of 1" down to the side opening of 5" which was folded in, finally, the hem was folded in by 1.5" while on the neckline, I used a black bias strip to tape the neck round for neat finishing.
Grandma's outfit is ready just as she wanted it and this is the final and beautiful outcome.
The remaining fabric will be used as the head gear to the outfit to make a complete traditional outfit.
It look simple and beautiful
