One thing I've always liked in MMOs are mounts. Especially cool looking ones. For those who don't know, mounts in MMOs are basically horses or other creatures you can ride to increase your movement speed. Mostly used when traveling between areas to speed things up a little.
If you're gonna travel it's always better to do it in great style in my opinion and luckily FFXIV has a ton of cool mounts to collect. Now that I'm finished with the story content of the game I'm gonna be spending most of my time in the game leisurely collecting stuff, like mounts, and leveling other classes besides my main classes.
The Elemental Nightmare Horses
It just so happens that I've finished my first mount collection! The Elemental Nightmare Horses! These are relatively easy to get but that's not to say they don't look good as shit. I've always thought horse mounts are basic and boring but luckily these ones aren't any ordinary horses. They're elemental!
These mounts drops from the six Primals that's encountered in the base game, A Realm Reborn, on the Extreme difficulty. Since this is old content these fights are relatively easy to solo which means these mounts can be farmed. I had to do about 10 runs of each boss to get each of the mounts.
I'm gonna humbly show off all of them.
Gullfaxi, of Earth
Gullfaxi drops from Titan, the Primal of Earth. He's worshipped by the kobolds who live deep underground. The earthly element can be seen in his brown color and by the rocks swirling around his legs. A cool one for sure and the first Nightmare that dropped for me.
Aithon, of Fire
Aithon drops from Ifrit, the primal of Fire. Ifrit is basically the god of the beast tribe called the Amalj'aa. Aithon is red like a fire and has burning feet. Aithon was the second mount in this collection that I got.
Xanthos, of Wind
Xanthos drops from Garuda, the primal of Wind. Garuda is the god of the beast tribe called the Ixal which is a bird like people. Wind helps bird fly so I guess some worship is in its place. Wind has no color but Xanthos has a light beige color with some swirlies around her legs.
Enbar, of the Sea
Enbar drops from Leviathan, the primal of the Sea. Leviathan is worshiped by a beast tribe called the Sahagin which are fish like people. Fish live in the sea so I can see why he's their god. Enbar is naturally blue with water swirling around his legs. One of my favorites for sure.
Boreas, of Ice
Boreas drops from Shive, the primal of Ice. Shiva is the odd one out here as she's not worshiped by a beast tribe but instead born of humans. That's a long story on its own so I'm not gonna go into it. Boreas has a white color with a cold blue mane and snowy clouds circling her legs. Awesome!
Markab, of Lightning
Lastly we have Markab which drops from Ramuh, the primal of Lightning. Ramuh is worshipped by small flying cabbage people called the Sylphs. Why they're worshiping a Thunder god I don't really know, but they do. Markab is a purple horse with lightning rolling around his legs. Probably my second favorite.
What did I get for it?
Well, for starters I got six cool looking mounts to ride around. For desert I actually got an extra mount for collecting all six of the elements! Got yourself six mounts did you? Well here's another one! I'm not one to say no thank you.
When you collect all six of these a quest unlocks fra a Traveling Minstrel that sits in what was the endgame town of A Realm Reborn. When speaking with him and showing off our mount flutes he recalls an old tale of a Lord of Beasts callec Kirin who has walked the realm for thousands of years. He's described as an untamable beast who will only answer the call of a hero he deems worthy.
This Traveling Minstrel just so happens to think that since we have all the Nightmare Horses we may just be worthy to call on Kirin. It also just so happens that the Minstrel has a flute that can call upon Kirin. With the Minstrel and all of the horses at our side we set out to do just that, and lo and behold, Kirin shows up.
Now as you can see, Kirin is really cool. He's this mix of a lion and a horse with a badass looking mane and long pointy horns. When we ride him on the ground he looks just like in the picture but when we take off into the sky he sprouts golden wings which almost makes him look like Zapdos from Pokemon.
Now it's not really that prestigious to own these mounts anymore due to the ease of fearming them. It would have been something else eight years ago. According to FFXIV Collect close to 80% of characters that have their collections public owns these mounts and that's a big number. Still, I'm super stoked to own all of these mounts.
On to the next collection!

wow you are dedicated! For me I lost interest in this MMO pretty fast because of all the fetch quests which were just waaaaaay too much of the game if you ask me. Another nuisance was the fact that you couldn't progress through certain parts of the game (if I remember correctly) until you completed a dungeon but other people also needed to be interested in doing said dungeon if you were ever going to get through it. I recall sitting waiting for nearly an hour at one of them before getting a full group and I was a healer!
My friends who love this game say that the endgame content is amazing but for me there was just far too much running around delivering this or that only to have to trek all the way back from whence you came only to be told to do it again. I don't remember where it was exactly but there was this massive spiraling tower that they made you walk all the way up to the top in order to talk to someone and this was the guy that gave you the fetch quests! So not only did you have to run around to deliver pizzas, but now you have to spend what felt like an eternity to return to the guy that gave it to you in the first place. Urgh!
When I set my eyes on a grind I always follow through. The base game A Realm Reborn is quite a slog, that's true. It gets better in the expansions. Quests are still a bit fetchy but at least you're not going back and forth between the same three NPCs for 30 minutes. The focus shiftes more towards the story as well which has kept me engaged and forgetting everything about the mediocre tasks the quests make me do.
I'm guessing you played this a while back? Dungeon queues shouldn't be much more than 10-15 minutes for any class now. They have something called roulettes which is basically random dungeon finders. Leveling roulettes pairs you up with anyone doing low level story dungeons and there's quite decent rewards for max level players for doing them. They also get scaled down so the dungeon doesn't become a cakewalk.
sounds as though they made some much-needed improvements. I do remember the dungeons being extremely easy as well. Even though I was a healer I had a chance to throw a rock or two even though it wasn't necessary.
I don't even remember how far I made it into the game, I'm guessing about halfway to max level. I don't do MMO's anymore but i was looking the other day and FF still has quite the userbase.
Oh and answer your question, yes, it was quite some time ago, at least 3 years ago.
the FF franchise has always had good models, at least from a certain time until today, it doesn't surprise me how beautiful both the setting and its NPC's and the playable characters are, I never dared to play this title in particular, I've barely played FFXIII and FFVII on ps1 and beacause how extensive they are it scares me to spend several months wandering in a single game haha
Definitely! I've really started to like Final Fantasys designs after playing this. I didn't really care for the games before but I'm leaning more and more towards playing all the old ones. I only played FFXII for a wee bit when I was younger.
Oh sweet! Those mounts look fantastic. Congrats on getting them all! I had no idea the Primals even dropped mounts 😅 I only ever did the Primal dungeons once each for the story questline... but that was back when I was first testing out the game and deciding if I liked it or not.
Aussie servers coming in THREE DAYS! Gotta get back into it!!
They do! I normally find horse mounts to be boring but these ones are special enough for me to love them. These drops are from the Extreme end game difficulties. It's awesome they're finally adding them servers! I saw there will be quite a few to choose from as well.
My god, reading this makes me want to play FF14 again! Once I'm done of SWTOR I think I'm going to have to give it another go!
Well, that's if you can. They've closed the game for new players now but I think if you already have an account you'll be able to resubscribe. That's until they get new servers :P
Oh yeah, I already have an account. In fact I have the majority of the expansions purchased. I went to play it a few months ago but just couldn't get into it.
this FF looks pretty good compared to other games with the same intention, there is no doubt why it is so massive
It's one of the better looking MMOs for sure. They really know their way around design.

Riding those horses in real life would be so much more thrilling. The Markab of Lightning, in particular, gets my attention the most.
