「Monika」 When the villain becomes real (ESP/ENG)

Over the years, new ways of exploring the "villain" have been born, our idea of the bad guy who just wants to dominate the world, has become quite outdated. As you may know, one of the characteristics of video games is the interaction between the player and the virtual world, and that is precisely what has allowed us to give new approaches to this type of character. Moni▜ka, from the visual novel "Doki Doki Literature Club", is the perfect example of this.

A lo largo de los años, han nacido nuevas formas de explorar al "villano", nuestra idea del tipo malo que solo quiere dominar el mundo, ha quedado bastante anticuada. Como sabrán, una de las características que tienen los videojuegos, es la interacción entre el jugador y el mundo virtual, y es precisamente eso lo que ha permitido darle nuevos enfoques a este tipo de personajes. Moni▜ka, de la novela visual "Doki Doki Literature Club", es el ejemplo perfecto de esto.

Conoce a M0n1k@

M▯nika is the president of the literature club, she is athletic, beautiful and intelligent. At first, she seems to be the typical perfect girl, the main heroine of an ideal love story. Strangely, however, the game does not let us interact with her, but we have to focus our attention on the other three remaining girls. As we advance, we begin to notice strange attitudes in the characters, little by little the tone of the game changes, until, finally, one of the girls ends up suiciding. And it is right at that moment, where we realize that something, or someone, is modifying the game files.

M▯nika es la presidenta del club de literatura, es atlética, hermosa e inteligente. En un principio, parece ser la típica chica perfecta, la heroína principal de una ideal historia de amor. Sin embargo, extrañamente el juego no nos deja interactuar con ella, sino que tenemos que centrar nuestra atención en las otras tres chicas restantes. A medida que avanzamos, empezamos a notar actitudes raras en los personajes, poco a poco el tono del juego va cambiando, hasta que, finalmente, una de las chicas termina suicidándose. Y es justo en ese momento, donde nos damos cuenta de que algo, o alguien, esta modificando los archivos del juego.

Mon▌ka's personality becomes more and more twisted, she tells us things that she, a fictional character, should not know. Our surroundings become increasingly chaotic, we see what seem to be g▄litc█hes, the soundtrack is modified by a more disturbing one, and to top it off, the remaining girls also end up dying, until only one is left, and we have her there, face to face.... Moni▁ka. She reveals to us to be the one responsible for mo░difyin▞g the files, as she is aware that she is a fictional character, and she tells it directly to us, the players, breaking the fourth wall. It is a character obsessed with the figure of the player, because he represents everything she wants, freedom, that is her real goal, to get out of those walls that have imprisoned her, to live a life like yours, like mine, but she knows it is not possible, so her only consolation is to be with us, even with a screen in between.

La personalidad de Mon▌ka se vuelve cada vez mas retorcida, nos comenta cosas que ella, un personaje ficticio, no debería saber. Nuestro entorno se vuelve cada vez mas caótico, vemos lo que parecen ser g▄litc█hes, la banda sonora se modifica por una mas perturbadora, y para colmo, las chicas restantes también acaban muriendo, hasta que solo queda una, y la tenemos ahí, cara a cara... Moni_ka. Ella nos revela ser la responsable de mo░difica▞r los archivos, pues es consciente de que es un personaje ficticio, y nos lo dice directamente a nosotros, los jugadores, rompiendo la cuarta pared. Es un personaje obsesionado con la figura del jugador, pues este representa todo lo que ella desea, la libertad, ese es su verdadero objetivo, salir de esas paredes que la tienen aprisionada, poder vivir una vida como la tuya, como la mía, pero sabe que no es posible, por eso, su único consuelo, es estar con nosotros, aunque sea con una pantalla de por medio.

La batalla psicológica y el uso de nuevas mecánicas

Great villains are associated with great fights, those that require the player to use his reflexes, speed, and memory to press the right buttons at the right time. However, the greatness of Monik▩a as a villain, lies in that she attacks directly our mind, she makes you feel uncomfortable, that you have no control of anything, and that you are completely at her mercy, even when you close the game, and I think there are really few villains that manage to keep you tense even when you are not playing, that's because M■ni▢▢ka, more than a character, she feels like an entity, she feels real. When you chat with her, you feel as if she is really watching you, she may know everything (or most) of what you have been doing on your computer, if the conditions are met she may know your real name, and she even gets annoyed when you close the game, let's be honest, how many of those who played Doki Doki still have it installed? . Of course, the concept of the fourth wall is not something new, but with this villain, it seems to me, they took it to another level; the fact of having to enter the game folders, modify them, and even delete them, seems to me a quite original idea, and a way that although, unorthodox, unforgettable to defeat a villain.

Grandes villanos están asociados a grandes peleas, de esas que exigen al jugador un gran uso de sus reflejos, velocidad, y memoria para presionar los botones correctos, en el momento correcto. Sin embargo, la grandeza de Monik▩a como villana, reside en que ataca directamente nuestra mente, te hace sentir incomodo, que no tienes el control de nada, y que estas completamente a su merced, incluso cuando cierras el juego, y creo que realmente son pocos los villanos que logran mantenerte tenso incluso cuando no estas jugando, eso es porque M■ni▢▢ka, mas que un personaje, se siente como una entidad, se siente real. Cuando conversas con ella, sientes como si realmente te estuviera mirando, ella puede saber todo (o la mayoría) de lo que has estado haciendo en tu ordenador, si se dan las condiciones puede saber tu nombre real, e incluso se molesta cuando cierras el juego, seamos sinceros, ¿cuántos de los que jugaron Doki Doki, todavía lo tienen instalado?. Por su puesto, el concepto de la cuarta pared no es algo novedoso, pero con esta villana, me parece, lo llevaron a otro nivel; el hecho de tener que entrar a las carpetas del juego, modificarlas, e incluso eliminarlas, me parece una idea bastante original, y una forma que si bien, poco ortodoxa, inolvidable de derrotar a un villano.

A unique villain

Un villano único

Fina▂▂lly, I want to say that all gamers should celebrate the existence of Mo▝▝nika, because she explores the villain in a way that only this medium can offer, no series or movies, it is the video games that have managed to innovate, and give us a character that, I'm sure, no one can forget, that's why, M▓onika is my favorite villain of video games. While I was writing this, I downloaded Do▮ki Do▮ki to revisit it after a long time, I must admit I'm a little nervous, who knows what I'll find when I open it?

Fina▂▂lmente, quiero decir que todos los jugadores deberíamos celebrar la existencia de Mo▝▝nika, porque explora al villano de una manera que solamente este medio puede ofrecer, nada de series o películas, son los videojuegos los que han logrado innovar, y darnos un personaje que, estoy seguro, nadie podrá olvidar, es por eso que M▓onika, es mi villana favorita de los videojuegos. Mientras escribía esto, deje descargando Do▮ki Do▮ki para revisitarlo luego de mucho tiempo, debo admitir que tengo algo de nervioso, ¿quién sabe lo que me encontrare cuando lo abra?

Quite an interesting one. I haven't heard of the game until now but I've heard about the concept. I think there was a western game that did something along these lines as well that I watched a let's play of but I can't remember the name. That morse code is kinda creepy.

Oh, that's odd since the game went incredibly viral a few years ago. In fact, Doki Doki is a western game, it was developed by a small US studio called "Team Salvato". And yes, my intention with the morse code was precisely that, I wanted it to look like Monika was communicating with the reader!
