Fall Garden Projects Around The Homestead

in HiveGarden2 years ago

Hello, hivers and garden lovers!

In my previous post, I talked about shredding leaves for garden mulch. That is an on-going project right now, but there are other things that also need to get done before the cold of winter settles in. In this post, I'll be covering a few of those projects.

The process of making garden mulch continued yesterday. I ran another 8 garbage can fulls of leaves through the shredder.

The pile is getting bigger, even with having filled 6 totes with shredded leaves to take to my community garden plots.

Another project that I finished yesterday was cleaning out the tomato garden bed and mulching it. I had started cleaning it out a week and a half ago before the week of cold wet weather. I still had a lot of plants to remove. This picture was from 3 days ago.

I got all the plants cleaned out, moved the boards, and started mulching the garden plot.

Here's the end result. This bed is ready for winter.

The other thing we did yesterday was to move the pond fish to their winter tanks. I can't leave them in the outdoor ponds over the winter because the water freezes and kills the fish.
We brought a few of the fish into the house to the winter aquarium.

The rest of the fish went to the winter tank in the greenhouse. I was still filling the tank with water from the rain barrels when I took this picture.

I have the tank inside the greenhouse because it's easier to keep the water from freezing. I put insulation around the sides of the tank to help keep the water above freezing. I use a clamp lamp with an incandescent light bulb above the water to heat the water a bit. I still need to finish the insulation around the tank, but that's a project for another day.

One more picture to end this post. This is one of the regular visitors to our front yard apple tree. He's a 2 year old. Last year he had nub horns, this year, he's a 6 point.

That's all I have for this post, I hope you found it interesting!

Always work to be done!

A deer visitor. That's so cool! But aren't you worried it might bump into some of your stuff?

Geez, he’s a bold bugger! I didn’t know some of the fish went inside. I thought they were all in the greenhouse.
