Here are a few monarchs and other critters for this #wednesdaywalk by @tattoodjay
I found a fairly fresh monarch on my early morning commute in downtown Chicago.
I found this guy trying to warm up right outside a Potbelly's reastaurant after I got a breakfast sandwich.
When they are cold you can easily pick them up and they won't fly away.
Later as I got to work and walked down the endless hallway to our temporary office I heard a scuffling scratchy sound on the floor.
Turns out it was a two inch long sewer roach lol. How did it get up to the 9th floor yikes. Hopefully our permament office won't have roaches.
Later in suburbia I went for a forest walk and found a gigantic bald faced hornet nest. This thing was larger than a basketball and still had hornets in it. Each year they die off except for the queen who hybernates under bark in a tree. Then she emerges again and lays eggs for a new colony to build another large nest like this.
I also found another newly minted monarch.
This one may have just hatched as it seemed to be drying out its wings.
I read somewhere that monarchs that hatch in September are the ones who migrate south for the winter. This one has quite the journey ahead.
Happy #wednesdaywalk :-)
Here have these butterflies so many.
Their crysalis is interesting if you ever see one look for the gold spots on the sides.
Lovely shots of the monarch, not so much of the roach eeeuughh
Probably more roaches than people downtown lol.
haha no doubt.
The monarchs are lovely! I am so challenged when it comes to photographing them. The freshly minted ones are so vibrant!
That hive is so huge! I can only imagine a swarm of those coming out to attack! Yikes.
Keep the roach. Methinks he was looking for you. Ewww! You really had a nice day and a great walk. Have a great evening!!

The hornets are fairly docile unless you try and harvest their nest of course lol. The trick with monarchs or any butterfly is to go out in the cold morning. I see them trying to warm up downtown all the time.
That is a great idea! I will try that, although it is still warm here. In a few weeks. Thank you! Have a great evening!

What an interestingpost I didnt know thta about hoprnets very interesting
Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :)
One of these day's I'll collect an abandoned nest and do a cross-section of it to see what's inside. They seem to be made of a spiral of wasp paper layers.
That would be so cool to see but be certain it is empty they can be nasty
If suddenly there are no more wednesday walk posts from me you know what has happened lol.
LOL well I hope I keep seeing posts from you :)
Bald faced hornets are the worst for biting you for no reason. And they leave a nice big hole too...
Ouch you've been stug by one before? The yellowjackets seem way more aggressive in all my encounters with wasps, of course it helps that I threw a dirt clod at their nest x-(
LOL Yeah, that would do it! yes, I've been attacked by bald/white faced hornets several times and I was no where near a nest. They just flew out of nowhere, bit me and flew away. Lovely deep hole each time....
Yikes, I must have run into all the nice ones. I get really close to their nests to take pictures so far no attacks. Here's one feasting on a walnut husk, maybe it was too distracted to sting.
That's the only way I want to be near them, via photo! LOL
Nice tour thanks @sketch.and.jam! I love the Monarchs too- all Butterflies really- even some of the moths over here look like Butterflies too.
And look at those awesome wavy patterns on the Hornets nest. Incredible art work there!
And I can't decide if that hallway should be in a Sci Fi, a horror, a psychological thriller or all of the above.
But what a great hallway to have a game on bowling or Cricket in! 😀
Thanks so much for the tour of your Wednesday Walk!
Loved it and can't wait for next weeks tour! 😀
That hallway is a pain the bathroom is on the opposite end of the building than the office. So you have to walk a full block back and forth. Maybe I should install actifit to get my steps recorded lol.
Seems you had a good run in with these beautiful butterflies great shots of them 👍
They are all heading to Mexico now, hope lots of them make it.
They are tough and brave little creatures the birds might have a little feast on the way but most of them should make it over Trumps wall 😅
They can fly through the slats. Maybe setup some flowering vines on the wall to give them a refeuling stop. Should help for the migrating hummingbirds too.
Haha...to funny anything is possible 😁
I'll stick with the monarchs. Yuck ... on that other creepy crawly. Hopefully yes, that big one came in on a bag or something and is all by himself.
I suspect the opera house has many nooks and crannies it can sneak in through. Maybe it came in through the old fashioned mail tubes that run from top to bottom of the building.
Roach highway.
Lots of Monarchs here, migratory lath I believe..
Also those roaches...
I think (here) they are Emperor Roaches!
😕😳🤯
