Which one is the best episode of Dragon Ball Z? Without a doubt, ‘Trunks from the future’ [A Review]
I have no way of proving it but I couldn't deny it either.... I mean, I mean that in this community the devotion and admiration for Akira Toriyama's work is completely superlative and unquestionable... That's why, when it comes to reviewing a chapter of his masterpiece, it's not only not an easy task but it's completely challenging for the one who writes to you. However, I must add that what it says in the title reflects my personal, subjective opinion. There are no absolute truths here. It is an opinion and an argument, nothing more.
However, I cannot stress that I have not hesitated, not even for a moment in deciding what for me is the best chapter of all of Drsgon Ball Z. And I stand by it, guys... But I invite you to do a mental exercise. Place yourselves on the couch at home or wherever you used to watch TV waiting for Dragon Ball. In my case, in my living room. At around 5 or 6 in the evening, with all the volume that old TV could hold... Why do I consider ‘Trunks of the Future’ to be the best episode of all? Well, for a number of rather interesting reasons...
Trunks, brings the inevitable conflict to the Z Warriors storyline. For the first time, the biggest threat isn't even mortal. I mean, it's not another creature that can be defeated, let alone experience terror and die, no? Rather, the news Trunks makes his entrance with is related to Goku's incurable and utterly fatal illness, and the inevitable (until then) arrival of the Androids and Cell (that last one is explained later. But it belongs to the Future Trunks arc). Also, so far (don't forget the mental exercise. We're kids again, we don't know the fate or plot of DBZ.) the only Super Saiyan is Goku, no one else....
We witness three major milestones in the same episode. The defeat of Freezer for the second time, of his father (a complete useless, haha) and of Goku's new technique; teleportation... Plus Trunks, who is a young guy, much older than Yamcha and only slightly older than Gohan from that period, defeats Freezer with a superiority hard to forget. His outfit, I'm pretty sure, was the envy of all the kids of that era. Plus, it brought out how beautifully the sword accessory looks. And if that wasn't enough... Bulma sees face to face what her son will look like in a few years, while not being able to recognise him with the naked eye... And Vegetta, oh God, Trunks consciously knows his father, the Saiyan Prince.
In the original time of this peculiar Trunks, his father, along with almost all of the Z Warriors, died battling against the Androids 17 and 18..... Plus Goku's death from a heart virus. So, Trunks means the hope, the strength, the illusion but above all the plot twist that Dragon Ball Z needed. Don't forget, that after Freezer's defeat at the hands of Goku in the saga, the story returns to that plateau of a bland shonen show, family friendly and half-boyish? It's Trunks I want to bring fresh air and strength to everything. Moreover, the ‘battle’ between Goku Super Saiyan and Trunks Super Saiyan is brief, yes, but totally aesthetic and beautiful from the point of view of the anime. More than 25 years have passed since the premiere of this episode, and much more since the first time we saw Dragon Ball Z, but here I am, a 32-year-old anime-loving woman who still hasn't forgotten Trunks and the impact he had on that little girl...
There should be a version highlighting Future Trunks as the main character. The moments he took part in the classic, like cutting Freeza in half, and his transformation after Gohan died. All totally incredible.
Trunks, as a character is just amazing. And yes, the TV Movie about Trunks and his struggle to became Saiyan with Gohan and Androids is just remarkable
That combination of emotions, the arrival of a new character and the revelation of the imminent threat of the androids was shocking. Also, seeing Trunks defeat Freezer in such a forceful manner left everyone speechless. It's true that his design and sword made him stand out among the other characters. Definitely a classic that continues to resonate.
Trunks is, indeed, a fine character and as a girl, a pretty cute Saiyan
Many of the people I know who are fans of Dragon Ball Z claim that this is the best saga that exists in the entire series. And I, as a fan of the science fiction genre, time travels and killer machines or androids, This is definitely my favorite bow. And yes, Future Trunks is definitely one of the best characters that the Dragon Ball franchise has brought to the world of anime.
Excelent review.
For me, the best saga of the entire DBZ world is Cell's. Not very people support this but as you, I'm a faithful of Androids and futuristic point of view in anime.
For those born in the 90s and later, this saga even brings us nostalgia and at the same time a lot of references to other franchises such as Matrix, Back to The Future, etc. Those who complain about this saga is because they definitely know nothing about Dragon Ball in general because of how excellent it is.
The thrill of seeing Trunks eliminate all of Freezer's men so quickly was very top notch. But for me the best chapter or at least one of the ones that stayed the most is Gohan's transformation to SS 2. The death of android 16 and all the drama, the elimination of the mini Cell and Cell's panic face for me was epic.
There are many more but that one will last forever (Or Vegetta's sacrifice with Majin Boo), very top too.
Really respected rank, @javyeslava.photo. No question about, those 3 are part of the best of the best of DBZ.
Funny how every anime friend I have has actually watched the Dragonball series and One Piece, but I haven't. I only watch short clips from Cartoon Network or TikTok. There was a time I was invested in Dragon Balls because I was enjoying the show on Cartoon Network, but I stopped again.
Here's a free piece of advice to you, sir, hahaha. You definitely must watch all DBZ sagas and just enjoy the brilliant work
I’ll try to do that 🤭
Good to hear that! 🖤
Certainly the appearance of Trunks from the future and all that it brought as a consequence make that chapter a very iconic one for the history of Dragon Ball, so I totally agree with you.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with the community!
Trunks brought a new level into the story of Dragon Ball Z. The mere possibility of really losing and die and a new horizon for Vegetta and his relationship with his son.
I don't remember which may have been my favorite episode but certainly for all of them, I could repeat the same saga many times and not get bored.
It's not easy to say which one is the absolute best episode of all, though... To me, Definitely there's no changing event in DBZ like Trunks's arrive into DBZ's time.
recuerdo estos capitulos fueron geniales, el trunk del futuro era muy diferente a su papá aunque al mismo tiempo tenia su carácter parecido jeje, buen post!
I remember these chapters were great, the trunk of the future was very different from his dad although at the same time he had a similar character hehe, good post!
Dragon Ball Z's characters are unique but powerful at the same time, @yasmarit . The sweet and tender heart plus combined with the strength and smart from Vegetta and Bulma's are deep inside Trunks. That's why he is lovely and powerful. All-in-one.
