Space debris and its dangers

Space debris is a term that refers to man-made objects left in orbit around the Earth that no longer serve any useful function.

These objects can be debris from disused satellites, rocket fragments, tools or even tiny particles generated by collisions between them.

The main danger posed by space debris is the risk of collisions. As the amount of debris increases, so does the likelihood of collisions with each other or with operational satellites.

These collisions can generate more fragments and set off a chain reaction known as the "Kessler effect", where additional collisions further increase the amount of debris.

The dangers of space debris include damage to satellites vital for communications, weather forecasting, navigation and many other applications.

In addition, collisions can release enough energy to destroy satellites and generate even more fragments, compounding the problem.

To address this challenge, technologies are being developed to track and monitor space debris, as well as to actively clean it up.

Measures are also being implemented to reduce the generation of space debris, such as the safe disposal of disused satellites or the design of spacecraft that disintegrate upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere.

The international community is working together to address this problem and ensure the long-term sustainability of outer space.

It is important to take action to preserve our space environment and prevent the accumulation of debris that could jeopardise our future activities and exploration.
