The "Plastic Island" in the Pacific Ocean, also known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is a large area of marine debris accumulation in the middle of the ocean, however, there is a common misunderstanding: it is not a solid island of plastic.
The rubbish patch is formed due to ocean currents and the accumulation of floating debris composed mainly of plastic.
It extends over a vast area in the ocean in the North Pacific Gyre region. Due to ocean currents and the dispersion of debris, its exact location is difficult to determine precisely.
Plastic debris comes from a variety of sources, including the fishing industry, urban waste and maritime activities.

Plastic breaks down into small particles due to the action of the sun, wind and water, resulting in microplastics that are difficult to remove and have a negative impact on the marine environment.
These microplastics can be ingested by marine life, affecting the entire food chain.
The situation is alarming, as the Pacific rubbish patch is one of the largest and most visible areas of plastic accumulation in the oceans, however, it is important to note that there are other similar areas in different parts of the world.

To address this problem, global action is required, including reducing the use of single-use plastic, proper recycling and education about the importance of preserving our oceans.
