Hi, I wrote this post in English and Slovak language.
In today’s post, we’ll embark on a boat trip along a river in eastern Slovakia. That river is the Bodrog, and I took this trip with my friends. Twice a year, we choose a destination and go on a two-day trip. And today, here we are.
We pass through the village of Viničky, cross a bridge, and turn toward the harbor. Here, we board a boat that will take us downstream to Hungary. We’re in the Tokaj wine region, so we were greeted aboard with some fine wine.
The boat’s propellers started moving, and we set off. I’m curious to see what sights this journey will bring. I’ll let myself be surprised.
The Bodrog River is the only navigable waterway in eastern Slovakia that can accommodate larger boats. It is formed by the confluence of the Ondava and Latorica rivers. The river basin is an irreplaceable habitat for water birds and plants, as it contains many peat bogs and marshlands. In the past, before the construction of dams, five rivers flowed into this area, creating vast wetlands.
This summer brought a stunning autumn, but today it’s cloudy. Fortunately, it’s not raining, so I head up to the deck. After all, the view is much better from here than from below.
The trees are already beautifully colored, slowly transitioning from green to yellow. Perhaps a rich, vibrant yellow, as in this case. The vibrant hues enhance the scenery and make the trip more enjoyable.
Our journey is made even more delightful by this colorful kingfisher. Can you see it? It’s not the best photo, but I had to shoot quickly because the kingfisher always flew away when we got closer, and I didn’t have time to change my lens.
The kingfisher is a fascinating bird. This “flying gem,” as some call it, inhabits slow-moving rivers in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It’s a solitary and strictly territorial bird that feeds on small fish. It weighs only 40 to 45 grams and is characterized by its curved beak.
Another bird that inhabits this area is the grey heron. Its range is much broader than that of the kingfisher. Except for the Americas, Australia, equatorial regions, deserts, and the far north and south of the globe, you can find it almost everywhere, as long as there’s water nearby.
Grey herons nest in colonies close to water. In the past, Slovakia was their temporary summer home, with the birds migrating elsewhere for the winter. Nowadays, many of them stay in this area all year round.
The journey is smooth, and we pass several formations jutting out of the water. Nature truly is an artist, creating its masterpieces without any studio—its canvas is everywhere.
As much as I like the old trees and branches sticking out of the water, this beauty comes with two drawbacks. One is the risk that boats may collide with these old branches or trees. It’s the captain’s job to prevent this. The second issue is the accumulation of trash, particularly plastic bottles, caught by these branches. It’s a horrifying sight to see so much waste in the river. The branches aren’t to blame, though—people are. It’s deeply saddening to see how we treat our environment. I couldn’t help but highlight this issue. A post doesn’t have to show only the good.
From time to time, we pass fishing boats moored along the banks. I’ve noticed that every fisherman seems to have their own spot. Among the bushes, there are chairs and setups, carefully arranged to allow the fishermen to fish in peace without disturbance.
The boat turns and docks. We’ve arrived in Hungary, at the port of Sárospatak. From the boat, we can see a medieval castle, and you can probably guess what my next post will be about.
Thank you!
Ahoj
A dnes sme tu.
Prechádzame cez obec Viničky, cez most a odbočujeme do prístavu.
Lodné šrúby sa pohli a my vyrážame.
Vzniká sútokom riek Ondavy a Latorice.
Okrem Amerického kontinentu, Austrálie, oblasti okolo rovníka, púští, severných a južných oblastí zemegule ju môžeme vidieť všade.
Nemusím v príspevku ukázať len to pekné.
Z lode vidíme stredoveký hrad a asi dobre viete, o čom bude môj ďalší príspevok.
Ďakujem

Hello! Thank you very much for posting in the Worldmappin Community 😃.
We noticed that you included more than one PIN code in the post. This is not necessary and can lead to double pinning. If you are writing about a trip with different points of interest, it is advisable to indicate only one PIN of the most important place or central location.
Double pinning can lead to problems for our curation, so if you keep doing it we can not guarantee you to be considered for our daily Travel Digest.
We recommend that you obtain the code either from https://worldmappin.com/, or by selecting the location directly on the small map at the bottom of the text editor in the PeakD interface.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our team on our Discord channel.
Cheers!
That's a beautiful river to cruise on! It reminds me a bit of the Tisza River, or some canals on the river Danube where I was fishing... Love the wildlife, and of course, hate people who trash the river! How many km was the route?
Thanks for sharing the great photos!
