Lindos is the second place on the island of Rhodes, which we visited in addition to the city, the beach and the hotel where we stayed. As well as to the city of Rhodes, we went to Lindos by local bus. It's also because we wanted to see at least part of the interior and it's cheaper than a boat trip.
The journey doesn't take long and in a little over half an hour we get out in a large parking lot. Furthermore, there are only narrow streets that line the white houses. It is amazing to see this city from the castle hill, which we are slowly climbing.
We didn't have to walk upstairs. Under the castle hill, local cattle breeders offer the opportunity to climb the medieval castle and the Acropolis on the back of a donkey. We decided to go our own way.
On the way up we walk around the relief of the ship - a Greek trireme carved in the rock. This work of art was created in honor of the victory in the naval battle in the years 180 to 170 BC. At the rear of the nave stood a pillar and on it was placed a bronze statue of the famous Rhodesian sculptor Hagesander. Some publications state that Hagesander was the admiral who won the naval battle.
I look up at myself, where I can see a stone wall up close, which is part of the mighty Johanite fortress.
We enter a wide area. In front of us we see the remains of the Acropolis and the ancient Greek and Roman temples that surround the rough walls of the fortress. Archaeological excavations are still underway on site.
According to tradition, Lindos was founded by Dori sometime in the tenth century BC. Lindos was in a very good position and was a meeting place for merchants, especially Greeks and Phoenicians. Gradually, it became an important shopping center. Its importance declined after the construction of the city of Rhodes.
We continue higher up the stairs and we see the dominant feature of the city in front of us. It is the great temple of Athens of Lindos. It was built around 300 BC and is amazing.
The fortress, which was built in the 14th century, partially covered ancient buildings. The fortress housed the Johanites, who defended the island from the invasions of the Ottoman Empire.
From the castle hill there is a beautiful view in all directions. On the one hand, we see the village of Lindos, whose architecture and especially the uniform color of the houses is extremely interesting.
On the other side we see the bay of St. Paul. It was in this bay that the apostle Paul hid from a strong storm and began preaching Christianity on the island.
I have to say that it's incredibly beautiful here, it literally breathes history here. However, it is also very hot here. The sun burns the rocks and walls and we head back down after the tour.
With a beautiful experience and a good feeling of a pleasant day, we walk through narrow streets full of merchants who try to sell their goods to tourists. We still have time until the bus leaves, so we look at the offer. I could choose more than one of the souvenirs, but I also have to look at my wallet.
In the end, we choose something small to keep in mind and go on a bus that will take us to the hotel. I'm already looking forward to bathing in the plague after this trip.
Well thank you.
S krásnym zážitkom a dobrým pocitom s príjemne stráveného dňa prechádzame cez úzke uličky plné obchodníkov, ktorí sa snažia predať svoj tovar turistom.
