Visit Portugal - Cais das Pedras in Porto

Hi 👋

Early mornings in Porto are a magical time, especially in the autumn when the air is crisp, and the streets are quiet.

Mornings have always been my favourite time of day, especially for a quiet walk through the beautiful streets of Porto. As the sun slowly rises over the horizon, the city feels like it's still in a deep slumber, and today was no different. It was a calm, sunny morning, the beginning of autumn, a time when the air feels crisp but still gentle on the skin. I laced up my sneakers and set out for my usual walk, this time heading towards to Cais das Pedras.

At such an early hour, the streets were almost empty, with just a few signs of life here and there. The occasional bakery was opening up, and the smell of fresh bread wafted through the air, mingling with the soft scent of morning dew. It felt like I had the city all to myself, a rare and peaceful moment in a place that’s usually buzzing with energy.

Porto is known for its narrow, winding streets and my route took me through some of the most charming ones. These streets, with their cobblestone paths and historic buildings, make every walk feel like a step back in time. The early morning light filtered through the narrow alleys, casting long shadows and highlighting the rich colors of the old stone façades. Despite their narrowness, these streets never feel confining they feel like they are guiding you towards something special and today, they were leading me to the Cais das Pedras.

As I approached the riverside, the view opened up and there it was the majestic Douro River. The river looked especially serene today, its waters calm and gently reflecting the golden hues of the sun. There's something so soothing about watching a river in the morning, before the city comes to life. The gentle breeze off the water was cool but not cold, a reminder that autumn was settling in but hadn't yet claimed the warmth of summer.

From this vantage point, the view of the Arrábida Bridge was breathtaking. Stretching gracefully over the Douro, the bridge is an impressive sight, its arches bold and strong, yet somehow perfectly harmonious with the natural beauty of the river and the city around it. It's easy to forget, in the hustle and bustle of daily life, just how stunning Porto is. The Arrábida Bridge and the river seem to tell a story of both the old and new, a blend of tradition and progress that defines this city.

Walking along Cais das Pedras, I noticed the esplanades that usually buzz with activity later in the day were completely empty. The tables and chairs sat neatly arranged, waiting for the usual crowd of tourists and locals who would fill them in a few hours. But at this hour, there was only quiet. It felt like I was getting a private viewing of one of Porto most picturesque spots. The quiet streets, the empty esplanades, the calm river it was as if the city had given me this peaceful moment as a gift.

The temperature was perfect for walking. It's that ideal in-between that early autumn often brings, when the sun still has warmth but the air has a refreshing coolness to it. As I walked, I could feel the sun gently warming my skin, while the cool breeze from the river kept the air fresh. It's a fleeting time of year, but it's one of my favourites.

Enquanto caminhava, pude sentir o sol a aquecer suavemente a minha pele, enquanto a brisa fresca do rio mantinha o ar fresco.

As I continued walking, I reflected on how the weather affects not just the city, but the mood of its inhabitants. On hot summer days, there's a palpable energy, a liveliness that fills the streets. People are out and about, sitting at cafés, exploring the historical sights, or gathering near the water. But in autumn, there's a shift softening, perhaps. The air feels more contemplative, inviting slower, more thoughtful walks like this one. The early morning sun is less intense, casting a softer, more golden light over the cobblestone streets and the historic buildings that line the way.

One of the things I love most about autumn walks in Porto is how the city's colours change with the season. During summer, the bright light of the sun brings out the vibrant hues of the azulejos the traditional Portuguese tiles that adorn so many buildings in Porto.

But in autumn, with the sunlight more diffuse and gentle, those same tiles take on a different quality. The blues, whites, and yellows seem to mellow, blending more seamlessly with the earthy tones of the stone streets and the muted greens of the surrounding trees. It's as if the city itself is preparing for the slower, quieter months ahead, its colours softening in anticipation.

If you ever find yourself in Porto, I can't recommend enough taking a walk through Cais das Pedras in the early morning. The combination of the river, the historic streets, and the soft light of the rising sun is a gift.

What a beautiful place! Makes sense the walks look different in such a location :)

Hi @gabrielatravels 👋
Porto, in just a few streets, we can see completely different things! That's why I love walking through many streets in the city to discover new places I don't know yet.
