Después de esperar siete largos años para otra película de Despicable Me no podía pasar por alto esta cuarta entrega de la película protagonizada por nuestro supervillano reformado Gru y su familia en constante crecimiento, la película intenta abarcar tantas tramas y personajes diferentes en sus 95 minutos de duración que parece que estemos viendo varios episodios cortos seguidos en lugar de una sola película, pero aunque no sea la mejor entrega de la franquicia tiene su encanto y humor. La película comienza con Gru y su última incorporación a la familia, un bebé mini yo llamado Gru Jr. que no soporta a su padre, cuando Maxime Le Mal, un antiguo compañero de clase de los días de villano, se escapa de la cárcel para vengarse, las cosas se descontrolan esto significa que toda la familia está en protección de testigos en un vecindario de lujo llamado Mayflower, y deben integrarse con sus vecinos ricos, Lucy intenta convertirse en peluquera con resultados desastrosos, las chicas intentan adaptarse a sus nuevas vidas y Gru se enreda con la hija de su vecino, Poppy, que está decidida a convertirse en una supervillana. Al mismo tiempo, la Liga Antivillanos convierte a cinco Minions en superhéroes, y hay algunas parodias divertidas de películas de superhéroes.
Steve Carell sigue dando lo mejor de sí la voz de Gru haciendo que el personaje sea cariñoso y ridículo con su acento exagerado y sus chistes de papá, Maxime Le Mal es interpretado por Will Ferrell, y su acento francés exagerado combina muy bien con el indefinido acento de Carell, Lucy está de vuelta y Kristen Wiig vuelve a interpretarla, pero el personaje de Lucy no parece que se haya utilizado tanto como podría haberse hecho y tiene algunos buenos momentos, como en una confusa secuencia en la peluquería que conduce a una persecución en el supermercado.
Tengo opiniones encontradas sobre Despicable Me 4, por un lado la animación es buena como siempre, con escenas de risas creativas como una silla de ruedas con neumáticos de camión monstruo, y los fracasos de los superpoderosos Minions en su heroísmo, cuando van a por lo absurdo las partes cómicas dan en el blanco, sin embargo la película trata de equilibrar demasiadas subtramas sin darles a ninguna de ellas tiempo suficiente para desarrollarse, por desgracia la relación entre Gru y su nuevo hijo nunca se exploró, sino que se trata principalmente de un montón de chistes sobre el bebé que odia a su padre. La película termina con una conclusión algo predecible pero al mismo me pareció bien ya que todos los hilos dispersos de la trama finalmente se unen. Gru Jr. finalmente se encariña con su padre como me imaginé que pasaría, el gran plan de Maxime de convertir a la gente en cucarachas se ve frustrado y las malvadas ambiciones de Gru permanecen intactas, dejando posibles historias futuras para la franquicia. La familia sobrevive, pero sin cambios duraderos ni crecimiento de los personajes, mientras los súper poderosos Minions ayudan a salvar el día a su característico estilo desordenado.
No es que no pueda evitar sentir un poco de nostalgia y un poco de decepción con Despicable Me 4, desafortunadamente la película no logra recuperar la magia de las dos primeras entregas al hacer demasiado a la vez. Mientras veía la vida de Gru y su familia en protección de testigos, deseé que hubiera más de esos momentos familiares reales que hicieron que me gustaran estos personajes en primer lugar. En su lugar, nos dan un montón de tramas dispersas que nunca llegan a unirse de forma satisfactoria y la verdad creo que la incorporación de Gru Jr. habría sido una gran oportunidad para explorar nuevas facetas del personaje de Gru como padre, ya que ha aprendido a convertirse en un padre cariñoso después de su propio viaje de villano, parece más un truco que una verdadera incorporación a la dinámica familiar y aunque Maxime Le Mal y Poppy aportan una energía nueva a la historia ninguno de los dos personajes se desarrolla lo suficiente. La subtrama de los Minions con superpoderes es entretenida en algunos momentos, pero parece que se escribió para otra película completamente diferente, siento que ya no es la misma franquicia que antes equilibraba tan bien el corazón y el humor ya que se ha convertido más en una secuencia de momentos cómicos que en una historia coherente.
Aunque el final encaja todas las tramas dispersas este es el estilo de la franquicia, una elegante fiesta del vecindario es el lugar donde el gran plan de Maxime Le Mal entra en acción donde intenta transformar a la gente en cucarachas con una pistola de rayos especial y las cosas se convierten rápidamente en un caos, los Minions con superpoderes finalmente tienen la oportunidad de brillar aunque sus esfuerzos heroicos son más cómicos que efectivos, en la fiesta el ejército de cucarachas de Maxime un momento para reír a carcajadas y Poppy ayuda a Gru a salvar el día, solo para que sus malvadas aspiraciones se mantengan al final de la película. Durante toda esta locura Lucy tiene su momento de redención con su antiguo cliente del salón de belleza y las chicas se quedan de pie y son testigos de todo lo que pasa, todo se soluciona y la familia vuelve a su vida normal, sin consecuencias reales ni cambios duraderos de su aventura suburbana, esa subtrama que trata sobre las habilidades de los súperpoderosos Minions no se vulve a tocar quedando en el aire como muchas otras cosas en la película, el final tiene mucha acción y risas pero me pareció que no aprovechó la oportunidad para desarrollar un personaje de buena manera o darle a la historia ese tono más profundo y significativo que pudo haber hecho de esta película una buena entrega de esta franquicia y no sólo algo más, yo le doy 6/10.

After waiting seven long years for another Despicable Me movie, I couldn't pass up this fourth installment of the movie starring our reformed supervillain Gru and his ever-growing family. The movie tries to cover so many different plots and characters in its 95-minute running time that it feels like we're watching several short episodes in a row instead of a single movie. But even if it's not the best installment of the franchise, it has its charm and humor. The movie begins with Gru and his latest addition to the family, a baby mini-me called Gru Jr. who can't stand his father. When Maxime Le Mal, a former classmate from the villain days, escapes from prison to take revenge, things get out of hand. This means that the whole family is in witness protection in an upmarket neighborhood called Mayflower, and they must integrate with their rich neighbors. Lucy tries to become a hairdresser with disastrous results, the girls try to adapt to their new lives and Gru gets involved with his neighbor's daughter, Poppy, who is determined to become a supervillain. At the same time, the Anti-Villain League turns five Minions into superheroes, and there are some funny parodies of superhero movies.
Steve Carell continues to give his best as the voice of Gru, making the character endearing and ridiculous with his exaggerated accent and dad jokes, Maxime Le Mal is played by Will Ferrell, and his exaggerated French accent combines very well with Carell's undefined accent, Lucy is back and Kristen Wiig plays her again, but the character of Lucy doesn't seem to have been used as much as she could have been and she has some good moments, like in a confusing sequence in the hairdresser's that leads to a chase in the supermarket.
I have mixed feelings about Despicable Me 4, on the one hand the animation is as good as ever, with scenes of creative laughs like a wheelchair with monster truck tires, and the failures of the super-powered Minions in their heroism, when they go for the absurd the comic parts hit the mark, however the film tries to balance too many subplots without giving any of them enough time to develop, unfortunately the relationship between Gru and his new son was never explored, instead it's mainly a bunch of jokes about the baby hating his father. The movie ends with a somewhat predictable conclusion but I felt it was good as all the scattered plot threads finally come together. Gru Jr. finally becomes attached to his father as I imagined he would, Maxime's grand plan to turn people into cockroaches is thwarted and Gru's evil ambitions remain intact, leaving possible future stories for the franchise. The family survives, but with no lasting changes or character growth, while the super-powerful Minions help save the day in their characteristic messy style.
It's not that I can't help feeling a little nostalgia and a little disappointment with Despicable Me 4, unfortunately the film fails to recapture the magic of the first two installments by doing too much at once. As I watched Gru's life and his family in witness protection, I wished there were more of those real family moments that made me like these characters in the first place. Instead, we get a bunch of scattered plots that never quite come together in a satisfying way, and I really think that the addition of Gru Jr. would have been a great opportunity to explore new facets of Gru's character as a father, as he has learned to become a loving parent after his own journey as a villain, it seems more like a gimmick than a true addition to the family dynamic, and while Maxime Le Mal and Poppy bring a new energy to the story, neither character is developed enough. The subplot of the superpowered Minions is entertaining at times, but it feels like it was written for a completely different movie, I feel like it's not the same franchise that balanced heart and humor so well anymore, as it has become more of a sequence of comic moments than a coherent story.
Although the ending brings together all the scattered plots, this is the style of the franchise. An elegant neighborhood party is the place where Maxime Le Mal's great plan comes into action, where he tries to transform people into cockroaches with a special ray gun and things quickly descend into chaos. the Minions with superpowers finally get a chance to shine although their heroic efforts are more comical than effective, at the party Maxime's army of cockroaches a moment to laugh out loud and Poppy helps Gru save the day, only for her evil aspirations to be maintained at the end of the film. Throughout all this madness Lucy has her moment of redemption with her former beauty salon client and the girls stand by and witness everything that happens, everything is resolved and the family returns to their normal life, with no real consequences or lasting changes to their suburban adventure, that subplot about the abilities of the super-powered Minions is not touched again, left hanging like many other things in the movie, the ending has lots of action and laughs but I felt it didn't take the opportunity to develop a character in a good way or give the story that deeper, more meaningful tone that could have made this movie a good installment in the franchise and not just another one, I give it 6/10.
