A look at their rations reveals a rather monotonous diet, consisting of items like beef, pork, flour, potatoes, and canned goods. Interestingly, a historical account mentions "pilot bread," a type of hardtack, which was one of the few hard foods they had access to. These ingredients played a key role in forming the basis for simple culinary creations, such as different varieties of soups and chowders.
