How to Be More Original: A few Tips To Stand Out

If you don't know, I work with D.Buzz (@dbuzz) as the manager and content creator. Today, we did our community highlight of the week. The focus was on being original (set to publish in a few hours). That got me thinking more about the topic of being original, and I wanted to add more to that. So, here are some thoughts on this topic.

It is no surprise that business today demands that we be more original than ever. New competitors, new challenges, and constant change make staying relevant and staying ahead of the curve the new standard for success. But how do you stand out in a world of copycats? You don’t by staying normal. You do this by being original. Here are a few ways you can be more original and become a more memorable presence in the business world.

Be a leader, not a follower

Easier said then done... lol, but...

Leaders are the ones that stand out. They can be any type of leader, from a CEO to a person in their own office. The quality that makes a leader stand out is that they are original. This often comes from being willing to be different from everyone else and being more open than the average person. Leaders are not followers. That’s why being original makes you stand out. Followers are always just trying to be like everyone else. They’re so afraid of being different that they never have the courage to be open or to make a bold move.

Do your research

You can never be original if you don’t know where to start. When looking for your next original idea, research what makes other people’s ideas original. If you review books, articles, and blogs, you start to see originality in a new light. You also find out what makes an original idea make no waves at all.

Play to your strengths

A great way to stand out is to play to your strengths. What are your strengths? You might discover that your strengths are storytelling, making great visual materials, or building relationships. Whatever they are, use them to your advantage. You’ll be more memorable if you don’t try to be someone you’re not. Focus on what makes you great, and you’ll be attracting more attention than if you try to be someone else.

Be a problem-solver

If you want to be more original, you need to start thinking like a problem-solver. That means looking at the world around you and asking yourself, "How can I make this better?" It could be as simple as finding a new way to do something that you do every day. Maybe you can come up with a more efficient way to get from point A to point B. Or maybe you can find a new way to solve a problem that has been bugging you for a long time. Whatever it is, don't be afraid to think outside the box and come up with your own solutions. The world needs more problem-solvers, so be one of them!

Be transparent

Transparency goes hand-in-hand with being original. All leaders are transparent, but most aren’t being transparent enough. If you want to stand out, you need to be transparent. You can be transparent by telling the truth, but you can also be transparent by telling the audience what you mean.

Ask for what you need

If you're looking to be more original, the first step is to ask for what you need. Whether it's advice, inspiration, or a new perspective, most people are more than happy to help out if they can. If you're not sure where to start, try reaching out to your friends, family, or even strangers for their input. You never know where you might find your next great idea.

Be willing to be uncomfortable

The only way to get comfortable and to be original is to be willing to be uncomfortable. There’s a famous phrase that says, “Be like water, flow wherever you’re pushed.” The problem is, most people aren’t pushed to be uncomfortable. They’re pushed to be normal.

If you want to be more original, you have to be willing to be uncomfortable. That means stepping out of your comfort zone, pushing yourself to try new things, and being open to new ideas. It can be scary, but it's also exciting and liberating. So go ahead and take some risks. You might just surprise yourself.

Conclusion

The best way to be more original is to be yourself. This isn’t always easy. We’re all so used to doing what feels safe, we forget how bold it is to be ourselves. Once you get comfortable being yourself, you’ll notice how much more attention you get.

In order to be more original, you need to dare to be different. Be curious and ask questions. Be open to new and unusual ideas. And most importantly, don't be afraid to be yourself.
