Author Shout-outs
We'd like to call out a few stories that got high marks from our curators this week.
@jadams2k18
Curator comment:
@jadams2k18 writes a story that is a sheer delight to read. He responds to the good old days in this story. The story has a bit of Romeo and Juliet in it, and a bit of epic heroism. It is polished off with a dash of humor. A baker is a retired dragon hunter. When a dragon suddenly appears, the baker leaps into action to protect his young assistant. The dragon is in pursuit of that assistant. It all ends well when the dragon's erstwhile lover (when he was in human form) appears and puts an end to the hostilities. This really is a rollicking ride.
@george-dee
Curator comment:
@george-dee writes a wonderful story in response to the good old days prompt. He introduces us to a grandfather who refuses to watch football with the family. The grandchildren can't figure out why he won't sit and watch. Then he takes them to a storeroom and shows them trophies from his days playing football. He was a star. But he was a human star. It seems the game the children are watching is played by robots. Grandpa explains this is not football. The story is really well told and it's inevitable that we will all like Grandpa by the end.
@loveth97
Curator comment:
@loveth97 writes a quietly emotional story about a grandfather's good old days. He has lost his wife, his son and his daughter-in-law. He has become reclusive and has been so for two years. His granddaughter is devoted to him. She tries to get him to meet people. The author gives us a view of this man's life through the granddaughter's eyes. Together granddaughter and grandfather look at photos and reminisce. They recall times long past. By the end of the story the grandfather is willing to gradually reintegrate into social life. This story is well told. Sometimes, emotional pieces come at us like freight trains. This one falls into our hearts more like a feather, insinuating, gentle and peaceful.
Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week
This week's prompt is: "The shoe is on the other foot."
You know we love odd expressions and idioms! This one is definitely strange. We hope you will have fun with it. It simply means that the situation has switched. Perhaps your character has always been the one to handle things in the family, but due to a change in circumstances the wife or husband now has that role. Or maybe your character always enjoyed popularity and was even arrogant about it, but due to terrible acne or perhaps a moment of indiscretion or an embarrassing mistake, his rival is now the popular one. Someone who knows them both might say, "Well, the shoe is on the other foot!"
Tell us a story about characters and situations where what was considered "normal" has switched completely. You can see more examples of this expression in the Merriam Webster dictionary and the Writing Explained website.
Remember, as always, we are looking for the elements of story. These include:
- Great first lines
- Good settings
- Well-developed characters
- Integration of action, dialogue and narrative
- A conflict that intrigues the reader
- A "story arc" which results in the resolution of the conflict and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion
- And of course, we are looking for well-edited stories that are not littered with typos or grammatical errors
You can find more on all of these topics in the catalog of fiction writing tips.
If you don't feel inspired by this prompt or the featured image, feel free to peruse any of our past prompts or our collection of idea-generators:
Writing Prompt Guidelines:
- See The Ink Well FAQ: Before you post in The Ink Well, we ask that you read our FAQ post to familiarize yourself with our important community rules and guidelines.
- Story link: Please be sure to post your story in The Ink Well community, and post a link to your story in a comment on this post.
- Hashtags: Please use these hashtags: #fiction #writing #inkwellprompt #theinkwell — as well as #dreemport, if you are also posting your story to the DreemPort site.
- Community support: When you post in The Ink Well, please be sure to visit the work of at least two other community members and comment on their work.
- Title: The title is up to you. You can come up with any title you wish. You do not need to name it after the prompt. Please do use the prompt word(s) within the story.
- Images: Please only use images from license free and creative commons sites, like Pixabay, Unsplash and Pexels. Images you find on the Internet are copyright protected and cannot be used. Be sure to provide all image source links.
- Length: We request that story word counts are a maximum of 1,500 words in length and ideally 750-1000 words. This is just a guideline. Longer stories are okay too, but they tend to get fewer readers. Additionally, The Ink Well admins appreciate keeping to that maximum story length for our time management. (Note: We generally consider stories less than 750 words "too short!")
- Translations: If you post a story that has been translated from another language, please include both the English version and the translation.
Reminders: Be sure to also read our community rules. As always, please avoid violent, gory, bloody, brutal, sexist or racist themes and language, NSFW (not safe for work) stories like erotica, stories with a political or religious agenda, and stories featuring abuse of any kind. (We have a complete article about The Ink Well stance on violence and brutality for more information.) And do NOT use AI tools to write or manipulate your stories. You must provide your own unique content.
