Jang Hyuk Portrait Series | My Favorite Character & Why I Fell In Love With Yoo Ji Cheol From K-Drama Bad Papa

in Sketchbook2 years ago (edited)

Hi all...this drawing is the second drawing in my Jang Hyuk Portrait Series. I shared the first portrait a couple of days ago in this post: Jang Hyuk Portrait Series | New Portrait Series After A Year of Art Block - Oh Hyun Jae From K-Drama Tell Me What You Saw

As mentioned in the previous post, this series showcases portraits of selected characters Jang Hyuk played in films, dramas, or variety shows.

For the second portrait, I selected the character he played in K-drama, Bad Papa. This drama was released in 2018 on South Korea's Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation network.

❤️ Yoo Ji Cheol From Bad Papa ❤️

His character is Yoo Ji Cheol, a husband and a dad who works as a detective. Ji Cheol is also a disgraced boxing champion who was stripped of his titles after he was accused of fixing an important match. Since that debacle, he had been struggling to make ends meet and trying to keep his family's financial situation afloat. On top of that, his teenage daughter gets into trouble in school and requires him to compensate for the damage. In desperation, he resorted to taking a bribe and was suspended from his job. Now cornered, Ji Cheol sees no way out other than to make a dangerous decision - participating in an illegal MMA (mix martial art) match to win the desperately needed prize money.

While his marriage is on the rocks, his bitter wife is having an emotional affair with an old friend. How does Ji Cheol redeem himself amid all these challenges?

"Since the past until the present, I never wanted to become a great hero. I just wanted to become an ordinary head of a household. I wanted to become an ordinary hero who could make his wife not worry about money and buy everything his daughter wanted to eat and have. I just wanted to become an ordinary father." – Yoo Ji Cheol (Bad Papa)

I love, love this drama on so many levels, and this is one drama that I have watched two times because it was that good. I have watched almost all of Jang Hyuk's work that spans his 25 years career, and I have to say that Yoo Ji Cheol is my most favorite character of his.

Jang Hyuk is a very solid actor who chooses his roles carefully. This character fits him perfectly, and you can see that he put so much effort into making it believable. He must have delved deep into his experience as a husband and a dad of 3 kids (2 teenage sons and a 7-year-old daughter) to bring this character to life.

He transformed from a very handsome man to this haggard, defeated-looking dude just for this role. He lost some weight, too, to tone his body to look like an actual pro fighter.

Some fans avoid watching this drama because of the fight scenes, and I suspect because Jang Hyuk looks so ordinary in this role and not the usually suave and debonair look he usually donned in some of his more well-known roles. But I love it exactly for that reason. Ji Cheol is so ordinary, just like any everyday dad who works hard for the family. And, of course, being married as long as Ji Cheol's, I can relate to his marital struggles, parenting, and financial woes. The older I get, the more I can empathize with such characters because, in one way or another, I have gone through similar hardships.

So yeah, I have a special place in my heart for Ji Cheol. Towards the end of the drama, I cried so much when more plots were revealed. He was a such sincere and dignified man despite his shabby ways.

❤️ The Portrait ❤️

This is the reference image I used for this portrait. Ji Cheol looks so tired and shabby that I just had to draw this. He looks like my hubby after a long stressful day at work 😂

And the final portrait...

I shared this drawing in a private group on Facebook, and some people criticized Jang Hyuk looks older than he should. Duh. He is an actor, and it is his job to portray his character how it is written. I get it, maybe I should tone down the shadows to soften his features, but I will not do that because this is how I interpret the character - exhausted and beaten down by life. Art is subjective; if people dislike what I am doing, that is perfectly fine, I just keep doing it the way I want 🤷‍♀.

And here is a music video of the drama made by a fan. I tried to find an official trailer but it was dubbed in Hindi 😆

What do you think of this portrait? Have you watch this drama before or if you have not, will you watch it?

That's it for now. If you read this far, thank you. I appreciate it so much! Kindly give me a follow if you like my content. I mostly write about making art, life musing, and our mundane yet charming family life here in Klang Valley, Malaysia.

Another amazing artwork!

I also thought he looked older than the last photo you shared of him. But it was just his character. 😅

Amazing isn't it? He changes his look depending on the role he plays. My next portrait of him will be vastly different from the first two, he's almost unrecognizable.

WOW this is awesome!!! your portrait is really excellent, I recently did one that I felt proud of but you are definitely on another level. congratulations!
