Rosalyn Sleep Box, Yogyakarta
While pods or sleeping boxes aren’t something new, this type of micro-accommodation has become even more common. In the past, these sleeping boxes were marketed as the future of lodging and were often equipped with high-tech features. These days, the scene has changed; now, there are even cheaper alternatives to this type of lodging. Typically, these places feature an app enabling its customers to lock and unlock the door and allow more features to be available inside the room. However, today, I’ll be talking about another type of sleeping pods.
About a month ago, I was trying this sleep box that recently entered the market called “Rosayln sleep box.” The place occupied the 2nd floor of an art shop. It was primarily built of particle board and wasn’t soundproofed. The only difference is that this sleeping door uses an automatic lock that can only be accessed with a password that the place manager sends. I think business owners choose this type of layout because it is more affordable and accessible, and the box is modular and flexible. It is pretty innovative to be honest. Since in this type of places, the architect must think of its ventilation and comfort of the guest.

One great thing about the space is that they chose great colors for their overall aesthetic. Despite being small, their color palette was pretty cozy—props to the interior designer, who undoubtedly thought through the layout and color scheme of the place.
Unlike Bobobox, this place was built strictly mimicing the hostel experience, except it has a few more amenities inside the pod. It has a charger, different lights, and helpful storage underneath the pod. It also has a single socket, which isn’t suitable for those who are having multiple devices. Simply put, this is truly a sleeping box, nothing less, nothing more. It is also not a place that you would want to stay for more than 2 days unless you’re pretty adventurous.
Outside the room, everything is shared. The great thing about the space layout is how they conveniently put the toilet on the father's side of the place. It helps minimize the odor that might come from such a place. However, the toilet was pretty clean when I was there, and I haven’t had any complaints. Another plus point is that they provide free water and a mini kitchen inside that the guests can use. This is helpful if you are into cooking and saving money from the meal.
This is also not a space for claustrophobic people. It is tiny, and anyone above 175cm wouldn’t feel comfortable living inside this little pod. However, with its affordability, this pod can be an excellent option for those who want a short nap, are looking for a new experience, or simply a stay over in the area. As Yogyakarta is both tourist and student's city, this type of accommodation helps those specific market.
Some notes
The place really piqued my interest. Though I could have stayed in other types of places, I was drawn to the experience of sleeping in confined spaces. After all, all I needed was sleeping and nothing more or less. The prime location also draws me to this spot, as everything is really close to Starbucks and various co-working spots in the area. So, given what I needed at the time, it was enough for me to sleep there.
There’s one type of lodging that I wanted to try that incorporates camping but not necessarily camping. It’s called “Glamping,” and it has decent amenities, especially for people who want to experience camping but don’t want the hassle of putting up a tent. I hope one day I can try it out and see what the appeal is for such places. See you around!
