Hi all friends of Hive Book Club, I hope you are feeling great today... this time I want to talk about a book that left me thinking a lot, it is Antarctica by Claire Keegan... this book is one of those that stick in your head and are there for a good weird... it is a collection of 15 short stories, her first book, and it left me very happy and even a little uncomfortable. Keegan is an Irish writer who, even though she hasn't written much, is already making waves, and rightly so, she grew up on a farm in County Wicklow, with a very strict Catholic upbringing, and then went to live in the United States when she was 16... all that gives her a unique perspective to what she writes, something very unique, but at the same time super original... from the first story, the way Keegan creates atmosphere completely caught me...
The places where the stories take place, especially in rural Ireland, and a story that takes place in the south of the United States, are dark and alive at the same time, these sad landscapes are not only the background of the stories, but also reflect and make bigger the emotions of the characters, the coldness of the environment seems to get into the relationships between people, showing that loneliness, that isolation and that wave of despair that is felt in all the stories... The way the author uses the place to make the emotions feel stronger is on another level, making every detail of the landscape have to do with the general mood of the stories. Imagine melancholic landscapes, a cold that gets to your bones and a constant feeling that something bad is going to happen, her descriptions are so precise that you can almost feel the cold in your body... in one story, a character comes out and Keegan describes how the air hurts her lungs and how the clouds crash in the sky, it's not just a place, it's a state of mind, and it suits tragic stories perfectly!
Hola a todos amigos de Hive Book Club, espero que se encuentren genial en el día de hoy.. en esta ocasión les quiero hablar de un libro que me dejó pensando un montón, se trata de Antarctica de Claire Keegan.. este libro es de esos que te pegan, se te meten en la cabeza y están ahí por un buen raro.. es una colección de 15 cuentos cortos, su primer libro, y a mí me dejó muy conforme y hasta un poco incómodo. Keegan es una escritora irlandesa que, aunque no ha escrito mucho, ya está dando de qué hablar, y con toda la razón, creció en una granja en el condado de Wicklow, con una educación católica bien estricta, y después se fue a vivir a Estados Unidos a los 16 años.. todo eso le da una perspectiva única a lo que escribe, algo como muy único, pero a la vez súper original.. desde el primer cuento, la forma en que Keegan crea ambiente me atrapó por completo..
Los lugares donde pasan las historias, sobre todo en la Irlanda rural, y un cuento que pasa en el sur de Estados Unidos, son como oscuros y vivos a la vez, estos paisajes medio tristes no son solo el fondo de las historias, sino que también reflejan y hacen más grandes las emociones de los personajes, el frío del ambiente parece que se mete en las relaciones entre las personas, mostrando esa soledad, ese aislamiento y esa onda de desesperanza que se siente en todos los cuentos.. La manera en que la autora usa el lugar para que las emociones se sientan más fuertes es de otro nivel, haciendo que cada detalle del paisaje tenga que ver con el ambiente general de los cuentos. Imagínense paisajes melancólicos, un frío que te llega a los huesos y una sensación constante de que algo malo va a pasar, sus descripciones son tan precisas que casi puedes sentir el frío en el cuerpo.. en un cuento, un personaje sale y Keegan describe cómo el aire le duele en los pulmones y cómo las nubes chocan en el cielo, no es solo un lugar, es un estado de ánimo, ¡y le queda perfecto a las historias trágicas!
And well, what really impressed me the most was how this woman writes, because her style is as if it were rustic and poetic at the same time, for example, in a story she describes the boring life in the countryside in a very raw way, but at the same time she gives you a very nice image of the clouds crashing in the sky, as if they were reflecting how the characters feel. . that balance between the harsh and the beautiful gives a deep vibe to her writing that grabs you... there's no cheap sentimentality here, not even when she talks about strong themes like infidelity, betrayal or loneliness, she uses a sharp language, with irony and super honest, but brutally honest. One second you're reading something super normal, and the next, she throws in a twist that leaves you shaking, it's like the calm before the storm, but when the storm comes, it always hits harder than you expected...
And the way he changes the narration, it's genius! he goes from first person to second person in the same story, just like that, and creates a closeness that both makes you uncomfortable and traps you, the characters are another strong point... the men in these stories are usually tough, serious and very imperfect, the women, the difficulties have made them strong, they have a quiet strength that is admirable and at the same time breaks your heart... they are not movie heroes, they are super real people who are dealing with how complicated human relationships are.
One of my favorite stories, “Antarctica”, is about a housewife who is looking for a little escape from her boring life, but ends up facing consequences that leave you cold... it's disturbing and not easily forgotten, Keegan is not afraid of difficult subjects.. she talks about family problems, broken relationships, and the problems that come up when you're in a relationship. she talks about family problems, broken relationships and what society expects from you, but with a critical eye, you can tell that growing up in a conservative catholic family influenced how she sees things, because many stories criticize traditions and how they affect people, but even though the topics are heavy, the stories never get moralistic or anything like that... they are tragic, yes, but not melodramatic, she has that way of showing you the hard realities of life without falling into clichés or simplifying things.
Y bueno, lo que más me impactó de verdad fue cómo escribe esta mujer, porque su estilo es como si fuera rústico y poético a la vez, por ejemplo, en un cuento te describe la vida aburrida del campo de una manera súper cruda, pero al mismo tiempo te pone una imagen re linda de las nubes chocando en el cielo, como si reflejaran cómo se sienten los personajes.. ese balance entre lo duro y lo bello le da una onda profunda a su forma de escribir, que te atrapa.. aquí no hay nada de sentimentalismos baratos, ni siquiera cuando habla de temas fuertes como la infidelidad, la traición o la soledad, ella usa un lenguaje afilado, con ironía y súper honesto, pero así, brutalmente honesto. En un segundo estás leyendo algo súper normal, y al siguiente, te mete un giro que te deja temblando, es como esa calma antes de la tormenta, pero cuando llega la tormenta, siempre pega más fuerte de lo que esperabas..
Y la manera en la que va cambiando la narración, es una genialidad! pasa de la primera persona a la segunda en el mismo cuento, así como si nada, y crea una cercanía que a la vez te incomoda y te atrapa, los personajes son otro punto fuerte.. los hombres en estas historias suelen ser como duros, serios y bien imperfectos, a las mujeres, las dificultades las han hecho fuertes, tienen una fuerza callada que es admirable y a la vez te rompe el corazón.. no son héroes de película, son personas súper reales que están lidiando con lo complicado que son las relaciones humanas.
Uno de mis cuentos favoritos, "Antarctica", va de una ama de casa que busca escaparse un ratito de su vida aburrida, pero termina enfrentando unas consecuencias que te dejan helado.. es inquietante y no se te olvida fácil, Keegan no le tiene miedo a los temas difíciles.. habla de problemas familiares, relaciones rotas y lo que la sociedad espera de ti, pero con una mirada crítica, se nota que crecer en una familia católica conservadora influyó en cómo ve las cosas, porque muchas historias critican las tradiciones y cómo afectan a las personas, pero eso si, aunque los temas sean pesados, las historias nunca se ponen moralistas ni nada de eso.. son trágicas, sí, pero no melodramáticas, ella tiene esa forma de mostrarte las realidades duras de la vida sin caer en clichés ni simplificar las cosas.

Some of my favorites are “Where the Water Runs Deep”, which tells you about a tragedy that almost happened to a boy and his nanny, and “Love in the Tall Grass”, which is a heartbreaking tale about a love affair with a twist you don't expect... and even the quieter stories, like “Burns” and “Sisters”, touch your soul just the same.
But I think this book is not for everyone... the atmosphere is heavy and the themes are dark... violence, death, despair, all that stuff comes up a lot, the author doesn't hold anything back... if you're looking for something like that to pass the time, something light, or uplifting, this is not a good choice, but if you're up for delving into the discomfort and exploring the depths of the human experience, Antarctica will reward you a lot, I assure you. . and I also have to say that in “A Strange Name for a Boy”, the author compares how a character feels to having a glass so full that you can't move for fear that you'll spill it, and everything will be ruined... it's a tiny detail, but it makes you feel so much that it really stuck with me... that attention to detail takes her writing to another level and makes each story feel like it's done with great care.
If I had to criticize something, I would say that maybe some people find the tone a little cold or slow, for example, in stories like “Quemaduras”, it seems that the story goes slowly and it seems that not much happens, although the emotions come to you a little at a time... that feeling may not please everyone, especially those who prefer stories with more action, but to me, that slow pace seems to let the details and emotions get deeper into you. Sometimes, so much perfectionism can make the stories feel a bit distant, as if he had polished them so much that they lost some warmth, but to me, that precision pleased me and gave it more punch, I give Antarctica a 4.8/5 stars.. it is a powerful collection, written in a beautiful way, that is not afraid to show the worst of life... I recommend it to anyone who likes literary fiction, just be prepared for it to hit you emotionally.. and several times! if this first book is a sample of what she can do, she is a writer we have to follow closely... and well, that's all for today, I hope you like them, and give her a chance, take care, byebye.
Otra cosa que de verdad me encantó es que todos los cuentos son buenísimos, en muchas colecciones siempre hay alguno que parece como de relleno, pero acá no pasa eso, cada historia tiene su onda y su propia voz.. algunos de mis favoritos son “Donde el agua es más profunda”, que te cuenta una tragedia que casi le pasa a un niño y su niñera, y “Amor en el pasto alto”, que es un cuento que te rompe el corazón sobre un amorío con un giro que no te esperas.. y hasta las historias más tranquilas, como “Quemaduras” y “Hermanas”, te llegan al alma igual.
Pero creo que este libro no es para todo el mundo.. el ambiente es pesado y los temas son oscuros.. violencia, muerte, desesperación, todo eso aparece un montón, la autora no se guarda nada.. si buscas algo así como para pasar el rato, algo ligero, o que te levante el ánimo, esta no es una buena opción, pero si te animas a adentrarte en la incomodidad y a explorar lo más profundo de la experiencia humana, Antarctica te va a recompensar un montón, te lo aseguro.. y también tengo que decir que en “Un nombre raro para un niño”, la autora compara cómo se siente un personaje con tener un vaso tan lleno que no te puedes mover por miedo a que se te derrame, y todo quede arruinado.. es un detalle chiquito, pero te hace sentir tanto que se me quedó grabado mucho.. esa atención a los detalles hace que su escritura sea de otro nivel y que cada historia se sienta como hecha con mucho cuidado.
Si tuviera que criticar algo, diría que tal vez a algunos les parezca que el tono es un poco frío o que va muy lento, por ejemplo, en cuentos como “Quemaduras”, como que la historia va despacio y parece que no pasa mucho, aunque las emociones te van llegando de a poquito.. esa sensación es posible que no le guste a todos, sobre todo a los que prefieren historias con más acción, pero a mí, ese ritmo lento me parece que deja que los detalles y las emociones se te metan más adentro. A veces, tanto perfeccionismo puede hacer que las historias se sientan un poco lejanas, como si las hubiera pulido tanto que perdieran algo de calidez, ñero a mí, esa precisión me gustó y le dio más fuerza, le doy a Antarctica un 4.8/5 estrellas.. es una colección potente, escrita de una manera hermosa, que no le tiene miedo a mostrar lo peor de la vida.. se lo recomiendo a cualquiera que le guste la ficción literaria, solo prepárense para que los golpee emocionalmente... ¡y varias veces! si este primer libro es una muestra de lo que puede hacer, es una escritora a la que tenemos que seguir de cerca.. y bueno, eso es todo por hoy, espero que les gusten, y le den una oportunidad, cuídense mucho, byebye.
