Les sandales Blanches autobiography of the opera singer from the banlieues. (ENG/ESP)

This is the story of a magnificent singer, of foreign origin, who emigrated from Algeria with her parents and became a diva after a thousand vicissitudes but it is also the story of a little girl, Malika who means queen but who only feels like a toad. Malika comes from an Algerian family, poor and with nine children, the conditions are not the best, her father has a small business, her mother is tired, stressed and seems to not care about her daughter, perhaps yet another child to look after, her whole life is marked by the routine of her brothers and by abuse and poverty. One day a reverse bus hits her and she was wearing new white sandals, what a disaster. Unfortunately they tell her that she will no longer be able to walk and her life becomes very simple, locked in a hospital bed, her world is a ceiling and the sweet nurses who wash her, her mother doesn't visit her much, she is too busy she says, her father tells her about life at home but he seems more and more tired. One day a nun comes to visit her and tells her many fascinating stories, at home they are of another religion but this nun manages to impress her with Jesus but above all with the songs dedicated to him and the church songs that finally give joy and color to her days. From here he will begin a journey of not only physical but also spiritual healing and also a discovery of a true vocation and a boundless love for singing, his voice will be his salvation in a world divided between two cultures, poverty, pain, racism and degradation. An incredibly delicately written biography, recommended!

This story sounds intense and moving! I'm struck by how it mixes self-improvement with themes like cultural identity and the transformative power of art. That Malika's voice becomes her salvation in the face of so much pain and adversity...must be inspiring.
