It took me almost forever to finish this book. Not because it wasn’t intriguing but because my attention was divided and there’s a whole lot on my plate. I used to think being a final year student was easy until I got to this stage. My mental health is even at stake as there are lots of deadlines to meet. Anyway, lately I get to go through a page of these beautiful books when I need to escape my reality just for a few seconds and gladly, here I am with a review I thought I wouldn’t get to write anytime soon.
Hannah Hall’s life takes a drastic turn when her husband, Owen Michaels, suddenly disappears, leaving behind only a cryptic note: “Protect her”. The “her” in question is Bailey, Owen’s 16-year-old daughter, who never truly accepted Hannah as family. Owen’s absence raises suspicions of embezzlement and a federal investigation looms, triggering Hannah and Bailey to embark on a journey to uncover the truth about Owen’s past and his part in the embezzlement. Their search eventually leads them to Texas, where they discover shocking things that force Hannah to make an impossible decision.

It’s my first time reading Laura Dave’s work and I must say she delivers a compelling domestic thriller that excels on suspense and emotional depth. The novel’s first-person narration, told from Hannah’s perspective, felt like I had an intimate connection with Hannah. I mean it was as if we were besties and she was pouring her out to me. I was immersed in her fear, confusion, and determination.
The pacing on the other hand, is steady, with short, gripping chapters that keep the tension alive.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its emotional core. I enjoyed the evolving relationship between Hannah and Bailey. It was beautifully developed, in terms of the shift from hostility to mutual understanding as they both navigated the mysteries surrounding Owen’s mysterious disappearance.
While Owen’s character remains largely enigmatic, I like that his presence is still felt throughout the novel. It made his motivations and secrets even more intriguing.
However, while the book excels in building suspense, some elements of the mystery felt predictable. I think it’s because I’ve become well-versed well-versed in thrillers and anticipated some of the twists before they unfolded. And, the ending, though poignant, wasn’t really satisfying as I hoped for a more shocking resolution. This is because the author made the plot lean more into emotional closure than a dramatic climax.
Anyway, this book is well-crafted. A blend of mystery and family drama? I’m sat!. Laura Dave’s writing is crisp and engaging, making it a fast and absorbing read. Therefore , if you enjoy suspenseful novels that focus on relationships as much as intrigue, this one is worth reading.

I love thrillers!! But I have never quite gotten used to the suspense. I always feel like i could literally die of it. And well, sometimes, I flip to the back pages to find the answers.
