Why I read...

During the heat of the COVID outbreak in 2020, I suffocated myself in books. I was at a sad point mentally, so all I could do was read to distract myself from my reality.

My book goal for that year was 50 books. By March 2020, I had read 35 books so at that point I stopped counting. I kept on at the same pace for the entire year so I sure as helm read over 100 books.

I felt good, however, I couldn't remember much of what I read. I don't remember a lot of the book titles, especially the ones with unpopular authors. I know I read all the books by Chimamanda and Lisa Kleypas, and that special book by Jordan B. Peterson.

It was an amazing book year for me and the next year it all went downhill.

In 2021, I probably read 10 books at most. I remember reading The Handmaid's Tales for a school application and a few other feminism centred books for my choice of study, however, I stopped reading when my application was rejected and I had to focus on making my days count.

I picked up reading again a few weeks ago. It was hard but I needed to do it. I had begun Le Petit Prince but I stopped because my French has gotten a little too rusty from a lack of use.

I decided to start reading again the best way I know how to, and that's by starting with romance. So, I got a couple of recommendations from a friend here and I got into reading cheesy romance novels from CM Owens. Her stories are typical but they helped me get started.

I realised I only read books when I need a strong distraction from my reality.

Reading makes me useless physically but not mentally. I could spend my entire day in bed reading a book. I won't eat, bathe or brush. It consumes me like a drug, it's like an addiction.

So, when I stop reading and I transfer my focus to something else or in most cases, someone else, I take that energy that typically consumed me with books and I let myself be consumed by my new distraction.

I know I'm not special and a lot of people feel the same way about reading as I do. So, what's your story? Why do you read?

Lol I read for almost the same reason as you, plus it helps my vocabulary and sharpens my writing skills

Yes, it does. I write a lot better when I read a lot.
