Fish Market in Campeche, Mexico
Campeche is a city facing the Gulf of Mexico where a lot of fresh fish can be caught. There is also a port town a short distance away from the city, and I saw fishermen shipping fish they had caught in the morning to the wholesale market a few times early in the morning when my friend and I dropped my friend's daughter off and picked her up from kindergarten. As a seafood lover, I wanted to try fish in Campeche as well, so I went to my friend and asked him to take me to the fish wholesale market.
カンペチェはメキシコ湾に面した都市で新鮮な魚がたくさん取れる地域です。市内から少し離れたところには港町もあり、早朝は漁師さんが朝とってきた魚を卸売場に出荷している姿も友人の娘さんを幼稚園に送り迎えする時に数回見たことがありました。海鮮料理が好きな私は、カンペチェでも魚を食べてみたいと思い、友人に行って魚卸売場に連れてってもらいました。
They sold fish similar to those sold in Japanese supermarkets, but they also sold shark-like fish, and there were many fish that I had never eaten before. The red fish looked like snapper, and there were also fish that looked like mackerel and carp. I wondered if they were selling sea fish and river fish together, or if there might be fish in the Gulf of Mexico that looked like river fish. I wanted to try shark, but when I asked my friend about it, he said he didn't know how to cook it, so we decided to buy the fish he had eaten before and enjoyed. My friend, who is a chef, knows how to cook many different kinds of fish and has worked with many different kinds of ingredients, so I was really looking forward to seeing how he would cook the red fish.
日本のスーパーに売っているような魚も売っていましたが、サメの様な魚も売っていて、今まで食べたことのないような魚もたくさんいました。赤い魚はキンメダイの様で、他にも、サバやコイに似た魚も売っていました。海魚も川魚も一緒になって売っているのか、それとも、川魚に似たような魚がメキシコ湾に居るのかもしれません。サメを食べたいなとも思ったのですが、友人に聞くとさばき方がわからないと言うことで、以前に食べておいしかった魚を買うことにしました。料理人である友人は色々な調理方法に精通していて、本当に色々な食材を今まで扱ったことがあって、この買った赤い魚はどの様に調理するのかとても楽しみでした。
I left it to my friend to be the connoisseur of fish and to negotiate the price, and asked him to select the best fish for us. Fish seems to be a bit expensive in Campeche, so we thought it would be a good idea to invite my friend's parents-in-law over for dinner. We left the fish market with enough food for their large family. We then decided to go around the market to buy other ingredients.
魚の目利きと、価格交渉は友人にまかせ、いい魚を選んでもらいました。魚はカンペチェでは少し高価な食材の様で、それはいいアイデアと言うことで、友人の義理のご両親を食事に誘うことにしました。大家族なのでそれに間に合うほどの食材を買って、魚市場を後にしました。その後、他の食材を買うためにマーケットをぐるっと回ることにしました。
Beer is a must in hot Campeche. Looking back, I gained about 5 kg during this trip to Campeche, but thinking back, I was drinking beer almost every day. I used to buy about this black beer called Modelo, which was very tasty. Also, the tomatoes grown in the sun in Campeche were really delicious and tasted completely different from the tomatoes you would buy in Japan or Sweden. There are many flavors using tomatoes, and there are also many ingredients in Campeche that are similar to Italian cuisine, probably due to the climate. The food is really good in Campeche.
暑いカンペチェにはビールが欠かせません。今思えばこのカンペチェ旅行で５キロぐらい太ったのですが、思い返せばほぼ毎日ビールを飲んでいました。この、Modeloと言う黒ビールがすごくおいしくて、よく買って飲んでいました。それと、カンペチェの太陽に育てられたトマトは本当に美味しくて、日本やスウェーデンで買うようなトマトは全く違った味がしました。トマトを使った味付けも多く、気候の関係かイタリア料理の様な食材もたんさんカンペチェにはありました。カンペチェは本当に料理がおいしいんです。
We bought three fish and an octopus. My friend quickly prepared the fish and the fish were ready in no time at all. We got the grill ready and started grilling the fish in the yard, and the whole yard was filled with a delicious aroma and the two dogs were barking noisily. The two dogs were barking noisily and begging us to bring them something delicious.
魚を３匹と、タコを１匹買いました。買ってきた魚を手際よく友人がささっとさばき始め、あっという間に下準備ができました。グリルを用意して、庭でその魚を焼き始めると、なんとも美味しい香りが庭全体に香りはじめ２匹の犬たちが騒がしく吠えていました。何か美味しいものをぼくたちにもちょうだいねとねだっている様でした。
The fish was really tender and the meat was really tasty. It was a bit sweet and tasted a bit like the fish we eat in Japan. However, perhaps it was the way it was cooked that made the meat more moist and sweeter than the one I had in Japan. The octopus was also delicious. I never thought I would be able to eat octopus in Mexico, so eating it made me feel a little nostalgic for Japan. In Stockholm, seafood is especially expensive and rarely available, so I was able to eat a lot of it during my trip to Mexico, and it was a really good memory.
グリスした魚は本当に柔らかくほくほくしたその身は本当に美味しかったです。すこし甘みがあって、日本で食べるタイに少し味が似ていました。でも、調理方法が良かったのか、その身は日本で食べた物よりしっとりとして甘みが強かった気がしました。タコも美味しくて、まさか、メキシコでタコが食べれるとは思っていなかったので食べると少し日本が懐かしくなりました。ストックホルムでは海鮮料理は特に高級で、めったに食べることが出来なかったので、メキシコ旅行中にたくさん食べることが出来て本当によい思い出になりました。
Here are some other dishes my friend cooked for me. I really enjoyed his cooking during my stay in Campeche. I took pictures of almost all the dishes I ate, and looking back on them now, I am filled with nostalgia. I wonder when I will be able to go back to Campeche again! I'll work hard, save up some money, and go back someday!
友人が作ってくれた他の料理も紹介します。カンペチェに滞在中は本当に彼の料理を堪能させてもらいました。食べた料理はほぼすべて写真に収め、今思い返してみていると懐かしさでいっぱいになります。今度、カンペチェにはいついけるかなぁと思うと、よし、しっかり頑張って働いてお金を貯めてまたいつかあそびにいくぞ！って思います。
