Den Anker

The V&A Waterfront in Cape Town has so much to offer to each and every one. I don’t usually go there because it is so busy and geared to tourists and people from outside of Cape Town. But there are a couple of neat places to visit, such as the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa or MOCAA.

Recently, I visited a kind of brewpub called Den Anker, which I am sure pretty much refers to an anchor! Jokes aside, we visited the bar to get a stamp for my beer passport, a really nice excuse to buy some beer and have some great food.

So, come along with me in this BEERMaps journey as I take you along with us, what we had to drink (at least, my beer), the nice food we enjoyed, and the stunning views we appreciated.

The Views of Table Mountain

As you sit down, you get the most amazing and beautiful view of Table Mountain. We had a perfect day; clear skies and no wind. The boats were out, the people were enjoying this beautiful South African, or Cape Town, day.

The Den Anker pub is situated close to the harbour, and while you drink your beer, you can see the many boats and yachts that leave for their cruises on the open seas.

You also engage with the many birds that want to steal your chips. It is sometimes a frustration but for the photographer I am, it seems to be more curious and beautiful. I lure the birds in with the false sense of rewards – obviously, I want the chips! – so that I get nice up-close photographs. I swear, no birds were harmed in the process. Jokes aside, they can really become an irritation when people feed them, because they think you will also feed them. The chips on my plate are definitely not worth the photographs.

The decor of the pub is also beautiful, reminding me a bit Italy or Greece, the herbs growing on the railings and where people constantly walk. As people brush against the herbs, the smell covers the smell of the ocean. But this mixture is beautiful, as it fills the area with a unique smell, linked with the many sounds – from people celebrating life to gulls chasing children trying to feed them chips.

The Endless Joy of the Beer Passport and the Anker Brew

I have travelled with my beer passport all across the country by now. From the northern regions to the southern. Every beer has its unique and own traits, characteristics, and tastes. I love every beer I have drunk, each one broadening my horizon through its challenges, conformities, and so on.

This beer was just like this. A beautifully brewed Belgian Ale that was so smooth and delicious that I drank it too quickly! As soon as I received the beer, the sips took me to beer heaven, and I enjoyed it way too much.

But we were there for more than just the beer, they had delicious food as well!

Belgian Bitter Ballen, Oysters, and Chips

This was more than just a normal pub. It had delicious Belgian foods and beers (but only local wines). We ordered some of the snacks to accompany our beers, the champagne, and the wine. The days was too beautiful not to celebrate.

We ordered a round of oysters with the Champaigne, and this was the first time my fiancé had tried oysters. I think we took a video of her trying it as well; it was an interesting thing to say the least!

We also ordered bitter ballen (a true classic in our family) and chips (you cannot visit a bar without having chips with your beer). It was fantastic!

Postscriptum, or So Another Stamp Done

My beer passport still needs to be stamped quite a few times. I have so many places still to visit. I love the whole aspect of the beer passport, drinking beers at new places and enjoying brews I have never heard about.

For now, happy drinking, happy travelling, and stay well.

All of the drunken opinions are my own, and inspired by the delicious beer and beautiful setting. The photographs are also my own, taken with my Nikon D300.
