It all starts with Curiosity; Larvae that consume plastic

A few weeks ago a study was published that stated that the lesser mealworm, which is actually not a worm but the larvae, a species of dark beetle, the image shows the larvae that can consume plastic, the key was discovered scientists found that it turns out that these bacteria are what help the worm digest plastic and therefore can help get rid of plastic pollution.

They could be used to biodegrade plastic and thus get rid of a very serious problem. There is already previous research on mealworms, but the yellow ones are also the larvae of another species of beetle and have been used to biodegrade plastic, which is how It is called that the worm eating the plastic transforms it into a more biodegradable and safe organic matter, however, this is the first time that it has been documented that these minor mealworms that are curiously native to Africa have this ability, which favors the elimination of plastic, using this technique to eliminate plastics in Africa.

Globally, we must remember that 400 million tons of plastic are produced every year and less than 10% is recycled. It is estimated that between 19 and 23 million tons end up in lakes, rivers and seas. Plastics can contain toxic chemicals and The waste ends up contaminating the water and affecting the quality of the soil.
