Bush baby!
I was told there are no lions around so I thought I got to do this and light paint that little tree along the road to my hut. That was my trigger for this post. What can happen right? When you start thinking about it there is a long list of things that can happen to you out here. The best outcome is the photo I got. so 100% I'd say.
Hier gibts keine Löwen, hieß es, also dachte ich, diesen kleinen Baum an der Straße kann man doch mal light painten. Was kann schon passieren, oder? Wenn man darüber nachdenkt, gibt es eine lange Liste von Dingen die einem hier nachts, was passieren kann. Das beste Ergebnis ist dann wohl das Foto, das ich bekommen habe, also würde ich sagen, 100%.
Where was this?
During my recent research trip, I was in South Africa and parts of Zimbabwe. While I was in South Africa we were working with some Elephants near Bela Bela. The Station is called "Adventures with Elephants". To get there we stayed in a small unpretentious lodge called Bonwa Phala. Driving in an out every day I cam across that little Acacia you see later again. My hut.
Meine letzte Reise brachte mich nach Südafrika und Teilen von Simbabwe. Während meines Aufenthalts in Südafrika haben wir mit einigen Elefanten in der Nähe von Bela Bela gearbeitet. Die Station heißt "Abenteuer mit Elefanten". Um dorthin zu gelangen, haben wir in einer kleinen, unauffälligen Lodge namens Bonwa Phala übernachtet. Hier seht Ihr meine Hütte.
Elephants
During the daytime I mostly work in sound and vibrations, so Light Painting is a nightly Adventure to contrast my daybrain activity I would say. As a curious person I got myself involved in some research work around the sound re-production mechanisms of elephants. This trip I went along with Angela Stöger for some more field work. This place here, Adventueres with Elephants allows for somewhat controlled environment for observations and more important local support.
Tagsüber arbeite ich hauptsächlich mit Sound und Vibrationen, Light Painting ist für mich also ein nächtliches Abenteuer. Wie das so als neugieriger Mensch passiert, gerät man da so irgendwie rein und plötzlich findet man sich auf einer Forschungsreise und arbeitet mit Elefanten. Dieses Mal bin ich mit Angela Stöger für weitere Feldforschungen hier in Bela Bela unterwegs gewesen. Hier bei, "Abenteuer mit Elefanten", gibt es für uns eine relativ kontrollierte Umgebung für Beobachtungen.
Night Acacia
Driving in and out of the game reserve I was always on the lookout for a bit of an open area and some tree that would work for night photography. I have tried this before and then there were Lions and other unwelcome surprise visitors. So how do you do that safely? Well, I knew there were no Lions so that was good enough. Lea asked me if I had these protectors for the snakes and scorpions. Until that moment I did not consider more than Mosqiouto repellant my boots to protect myself but hey I will try that. So I need to prepare my boots. I was a bit afraid it would get too warm when I started running around. But to my surprise, it was much better than expected.
Wenn ich durch das Wildreservat fuhr, hielt ich immer Ausschau nach schön offenem Gelände und einem Baum, fürs Light Painting. Ich habe das schon einmal versucht, und damals gab es gleich zwei Löwen und andere unerwünschte Überraschungsbesucher. Also, wie gestaltet man das hier sicher? Nun, ich wusste, dass es keine Löwen gab, also war das schon mal gut. Lea fragte mich dann, ob ich diese Schutzvorrichtungen für Schlangen und Skorpione hätte. Bis zu diesem Moment hatte ich nicht mehr als Antimückenspray und meine Stiefel zum Schutz in Betracht gezogen, aber hey, ich werde das mal versuchen. Einzige Angst, die Ich hatte war: dass zu warm werden würde, wenn ich anfinge, herumzulaufen. Aber zu meiner Überraschung war es viel besser als erwartet.
Risk Assesment
Oh yes the tree itself also has a defense! Do not forget that at night when you wals around the tree.
Achja der Baum hat auch noch ein eigenens Abwehrsystem. Schön Vorsichtig in der Nach!
As the Night approaches
As the sunset is performing its dance with the light I was gearing up for my little Experiment. Tonight I thought I try my faforite Light Painting tool, the black fiber optic brush, on a tree. Its not that big of a tree so that should work. Just watch out for all the thorns.
Der Sonnenuntergang vollführt sein Spiel mit dem Licht und ich bereitete mich auf mein kleines Experiment vor. Heute Abend wollte ich mal mein Lieblings-Light-Painting-Werkzeug, die Schwarze Fiber-Optic an einem Baum ausprobieren. Es ist kein besonders großer Baum, also sollte das funktionieren.
The Setup
The tree was not very big so it was relatively simple to choose a very low vantage point to also see parts of the night sky and hopefully the Milky Way.
Der Baum war nicht sehr groß, daher war es relativ einfach, einen sehr niedrigen Standpunkt zu wählen, um auch Teile des Nachthimmels und hoffentlich die Milchstraße zu sehen.
Just get the flashlight out and see what the settings will be. Starting with ISO 1600 and F2.8 will get us the stars. To do that I need to tune down my flashlight and /* or be very fast lighting up that tree. Ok then lets try some Fiber Optics here.
Einfach die Taschenlampe raus und sehen Sie, welche Einstellungen passen. Mit ISO 1600 und Blende F2.8 gabs die Sterne. Jetzt noch die Helligkeit meiner Taschenlampe reduzieren und/oder sehr schnell sein, um den Baum auszuleuchten. Na dann los Light Painting!
This was already a shot putting a huge smile on my face. This made so happy already. It was a quick brush with the fiber optics and 25 seconds for the stars. All in it was 31 seconds at ISO 1600 at F2.8 for the stars and a few seconds on F11 for the fiber brush.
Das Foto, da hatte ich sofort ein breites Lächeln im Gesicht. Da war ich schon glücklich. Paar Sekunden für die Fiberoptics und 25 Sekunden für die Sterne. Insgesamt waren es 31 Sekunden bei ISO 1600 und Blende F2.8 für die Sterne und ein paar Sekunden bei Blende F11 für die Fiberoptics.
The Shot
I did have a few colored flashlights and adding a little bit of color was a must at this stage. Having the other shot already in camera there was only bonus Light Painting.
Adding a bit of green and orange I thought I added a bit of a mind-bender. The viewer can ask how that was made and I will be happy about that. Adding the colors required me to run more and change the torches mid-exposure. The entire process then took 133 seconds with the same settings as before.
Which one is your faforite?
Hatte noch mehr farbige Lampen dabei, mehr Farbe, war in diesem Moment ein Muss. Das andere Foto hatte ich ja schon, jedes zusätzliche Light Painting war Bonus.
Mit etwas Farbe wie Grün und Orange dachte ich, könnte es interessanter werden. Wenn sich der Betrachter fragt, wie das gemacht wurde, find ich's schon cool. Mehr Farben erforderten, dass ich während der Belichtung mehr herumlaufe und die Taschenlampen wechsle. Der gesamte Prozess dauerte dann so 133 Sekunden bei den gleichen Einstellungen wie zuvor.

Das ist wieder eine sehr beeindruckende Story und vor allem präsentierst du sehr schöne Bilder. Südafrika ist für mich noch ein weißer Fleck auf der Landkarte. Gern würde ich mal dorthin reisen. Bisher hat es sich noch nicht ergeben. Wie du weißt, heißt mein Revier Südamerika.
Sehr interessant fand ich daher das Detail mit den Schutzvorrichtungen für Schlangen und Skorpione. Die Dinger brauche ich auch! Zumal ich schon mehrere Fastunfälle mit giftigen Schlangen hatte. Bisher hatte ich stets Glück und die Biester haben nicht zugeschnappt.
Freut mich wenn mein kleiner Artikel mehr als nur schicke Bilder lieferte. Hier mal die Produktdetails zu den Dingern. Ich fands bisschen "Overkill" aber immerhin bin ich nicht bei draufgegangen bin 😎

And yes Elephants, dont get me started. I am a huge fan and always excited to learn more about em. I was sitting under the tree and the both came right up to me gentle as a gians can float through midair. Both curious yet respectful for my space.
Amazing how silently they tread through the veld, most accepting once they know you mean no harm, respect is very much a two way street!

Hahaa yes .. 'funny' you'd asked .. We did see two Hyenas a few days prior. To may luck they were not around and also I think it were some brown hyena aka laughing hyena's .. they seemed super shy and kept distance not to be seen again ..
It would have been even more of an adventure if they'd started making noise while you were out there at night 😂 I'm glad they didn't put you on the menu, though!
