Feeling a Hint of Spring
After several super cold weeks, we now have a relaxing moment. I noticed some little birds flying by, and the snow and ice have started melting little by little. Unfortunately, my allergies have also started.
This year's cold was pretty tough, so hopefully, it won’t return. I don’t like when cold weather comes back after a warm, relaxing period. We needed to add extra wood to our woodshed this year. Usually, we don’t need to buy more than two cords of wood, but this year’s preparation wasn’t enough. By the end of February, our woodshed was almost empty, so we had to add more wood.
We also used wood from our backyard. The trees that had fallen a few years ago during a big summer storm. After drying for years, they were finally ready to use. Some of them were ash trees, which are quite hard and burn well. We still have more fallen trees from another storm, and we need to prepare them this spring or summer for next winter.
In the near future, it might become impossible to keep using trees like this for heating our house. So, what are our options?
There are eco-sustainable heating alternatives beyond wood, gas, and electricity geothermal heating, solar thermal, hydrogen heating, biomass (non-wood), thermal mass, heat recovery & district heating, and more.
Hmm… there are many options, but some have high initial costs, others depend on the weather, and some still require burning fuel. What type of energy and lifestyle would be simple and suitable for me? I’m still not sure, but I need to start making plans for the near future.
Hopefully, the weather will stay stable, and spring will settle in without running away.

少しだけ春を感じる
ものすごい寒波が過ぎ去って、やっと少しだけ寒さがやわらいできました。小さな鳥たちが飛び交うようになり、雪や氷が少しずつとけ始めています。残念ながら、アレルギーも始まりました。
今年の寒さはかなりの厳しさでしたので、このまま暖かくなってほしいものです。寒さがやわらいだと思ったらふたたび寒くなる感じは大嫌いです。今年は途中で薪を買い足さなければなりませんでした。普段は、２コードほどの薪を買えば十分冬を乗り越えることができるのですが、今年は予想外でした。２月の下旬に薪小屋の薪がほぼなくなりました。あわてて少し買い足しました。
さらに、今年は裏庭の倒れた木も薪にして使用しました。数年前の夏の嵐で倒れてしまった木を、何年か乾燥させておいたものです。アッシュツリーは硬くてよく燃えます。裏庭には別の嵐で倒れた木がまだ残っていますので、今年の春か夏に切って冬用に備えておかなければなりません。
近い将来、こんなふうに薪を使用して暖房にすることがおそらく不可能になる日がやってきますよね…。他にどんなオプションが考えられるのでしょうか。木材・ガス・電気以外のエコで持続可能な暖房方法には、地熱暖房 、水素暖房、バイオマス（非木材）、蓄熱暖房 、排熱回収 & 地域暖房 などがあるようです。
うーん、いろいろとオプションがあるようですが、設置コストがかなり高いものや天候に左右されるものもありますし、やはり燃焼燃料が必要なものもあります。どんなスタイルが一番シンプルで自分の暮らしぶりに合うのでしょうか。いまだに理想を一つには絞りきれない自分がいますが、もうじき、いよいよ将来に向けて計画を練らなければなりません。
このまま春が逃げずにそばにいてほしいです。
