One of the most ingenious and stealthy birds that inhabit the bodies of water in Cuba and much of the American continent is called Green Heron in English, but better known as Aguaitacaimán with its Spanish name. This species is a marvel for photographers and bird lovers alike because of its ability to blend in with its surroundings and its unique hunting technique. In this post I will share with you my experiences photographing this enigmatic hunter in its natural environment.
Who is the Aguaitacaiman?
It is a medium-sized bird that usually inhabits salt and fresh water bodies. Its dark brown and greenish-brown plumage and yellow legs allow it to go unnoticed while hunting. It is known to use tools, placing small objects in the water to bring fish within reach.
The natural camouflage of the aguaitacaiman
This is based on the combination of dark colors in its plumage, which makes it almost invisible among the branches and in the shade. Its patient behavior, being motionless for a long time, makes it a master of stealth.
How to take a picture of it?
The task requires not only technical skills, but also a good dose of patience and observation. Here are some tips:
... Prioritize the early and late hours of the day to take advantage of the soft light that creates dramatic images.
... Observe their motionless behavior, take advantage of their moments of stillness before they pounce on their prey.
... Use a telephoto lens to maintain a respectful distance from the bird, especially when it is hunting for food.
My photographic experience
I have fond memories looking for this species in the rivers and reservoirs near where I live, almost always given their mastery it is difficult to locate them, only when they move is when you can observe them. It is a challenge to get close without being seen. More than half the time they are useless, but with patience I have been able to photograph them without interfering with their behavior.
The importance of camouflage.
Its camouflage is not only vital for hunting and feeding, but also protects it from predators. It is amazing to see when a peregrine falcon appears. All birds flee in terror, but they only look for a place to hide and blend in with their surroundings.
The Green Heron or Aguaitacaimán is a living testimony of nature's perfection.
I hope this post inspires you to look for and take pictures of this beautiful bird.

Nice to see you in action too.
We have a lot of gray herons over here. They are not as stealthy as their green relatives 😃
