I had always been involved in music from my childhood, and it has always been a very important aspect of my life. Since childhood, I have always liked singing – even if it was alone, when I hummed a tune to myself, and even if it was singing at the top of my voice. I might not remember much of what occurred when I was very young but I can only deduce that music made me happy.
I became even more engrossed with music as I was growing up. I started singing in my school choir during my primary education and had the best experience singing with my fellow students during occasions and other functions. I also joined my church children’s choir, and for the first time, I realized how it feels to sing with my own voice in praising the Lord. I never learned how to play any musical instruments as a child but I can vividly remember struggling through ‘Hot Cross Buns’ on recorder during my elementary school class.
I began to try my hand at songwriting at the beginning of my teenage years. For now, I have only written two full songs, which I believe still require some polishing before releasing them to the public. The task of turning the melodies that played in my head into words on the paper was quite a creative endeavour, though a tough one. Despite the hardships, the ability to externalize my inner life through music made the challenges worth enduring.
During my young adult stage, I also ensured that I pursued my musical interests by listening to various artists from different music genres. Listening to a large variety of music genres from the classics to jazz, alternative rock, and electronic dance music enriched my musical knowledge. It was also in these years that I made a point of singing out to every song that felt as though it spoke to me.
Even at this age, I attend my church choir regularly. It pleases me to raise my voice among passionate musicians to glorify God through song. And if I’m not practising for a sacred music concert, I like to record new versions of famous songs and upload them to YouTube. As for the original songs, I have yet to complete any of those; however, I do intend to write songs again once I get the chance.
I am also at present involved in the enhancement of my instrumental as well as vocal skills. I have been curious to learn classical guitar for some time now and I began my lessons a few months ago. However, raising the finger strength and memorizing the chords still poses a challenge and I will not relent. I have also started practising the voice so as to improve its flexibility and accuracy, apart from learning new songs. Despite the fact that learning has been a process that demands a lot of patience, I can hear and feel the difference.
If I look at what is in store for me in the days to come, I have not lost my passion for music. My goal is to engage in art making at a minimal level as long as I can possibly can, which in my case is music. Despite never being a rock star and not making any money from my passion, it feels amazing to be able to sing and let others hear my music. In any case, I am sure that music will always remain an important part of my life and my life path.
