No One Was Holding My Beer?!

My entire yard is wind polished ice.

Winter is trying to dig in, refusing to surrender to spring. The cows need fed anyway... So I waddled outside bundled like Ralphie from "A Christmas Story." I fell. You know how sometimes you look around, hoping no one saw you? Just the opposite. My husband was right there with me but in front of me with his back turned. None of my neighbors called to check on me or laugh at me, so I presume none of them saw me go down either. I am a little bummed, I really wish SOMEONE had seen it!

Many years ago (OK, decades!) I was in the water, putting my ski on. Another boat was coming up behind me and I could hear someone on that boat yelling "There's a skier! There's a skier!" (Yes, we had the flag up, they were drunk and oblivious.) I turn to see them coming right at me, although they were beginning to swerve. They were towing a person on an inner tube and that person was swinging to my left as the boat cut to my right. The tow rope was about to garrote me. I tried to go underwater, threw my arms up to push myself down. Because of my life vest I did not really sink but I got my arm between the tow rope and my throat. I was flipped out of the water and tossed through the air. I have no doubt it would have killed me had I not gotten my arm up. I tell this story because it was the first time in my life time slowed down for me. I know about how fast it all happened, ten seconds or less. I know how many thought processes I went through, and it was WAY more than ten seconds worth. I know many humans experience this, especially when in grave danger and it is one of the most trippy things I have ever lived through.

Yesterday I think it happened again. Last winter I took a NASTY fall and it took months for my tailbone to quit aching. Then last summer I hit it again... it was several more months before I could sit and walk without pain. Yesterday I either took the world's slowest fall on the ice, or I slowed down time again. It is very odd, I can recite many of the things I thought as I fell. "Oh, can't hit my butt again. OK, lets get this leg going that way, now lets get that arm out - careful of the wrist! Now then, arch that butt up so I hit on my lower back, roll with it, ease it down..." I am not even sore this morning, not so much as a bruise anywhere. I have seen videos, sometimes people really do fall sort of "slow motion" like and maybe that is what happened. Or maybe I felt threatened enough to muster that odd little stunt of slowing time. If only SOMEONE had been holding my beer and watching that!!

So, yes, I am sick of winter at this point yet it is still just stunning scenery. Please, though, do watch your step! Or mine....

NAMASTE!

Sort:

It's been the same around here, I was just thinking yesterday while driving around in the rain that it was some special mythical magical event watching it rain in February, turn to freezing ice by nightfall, blowing snow by midnight then watch it all defrost in a matter of hours the next day then start all over again. The local schools have been shut down so much the state legislature is thinking about granting them grace not to make it up in June.

Lol! And every kid is on pins and needles over it, I am sure! That happened to me in 1976, back in Ohio. Record setting blizzards and they wound up saying we were 2 days over the number we could miss, and they took about a month to decide to just not worry about it. When they finally announced we would NOT have to make them up, you would have thought each and every one of us had just won the mega-lottery...

lol

same for me as a kid in kentucky

Covington area by any chance? I was raised just north of Cincinnati, would have been the same storms if you were just across the river! That was a brutal winter, worst of my life until two years ago here in Idaho.

i love the view...and you're absolutely positive you wasn't humming that song about...slip sliding away...?

😂 Maybe a little of that too...

Maybe it was so cold your mind slowed down ;)

Lol! If SOMEONE had been holding my beer and watching this, we ALL would know for sure... I need to fire my beer holder apparently,.
