When we moved to Central America 18 years ago, we had grown boys who were staying in Canada, a pre-teen and a teen moving with us. We looked at it as an adventure of a lifetime. We were already eating most of our meals homemade. The kids didn't miss being in the city because we never really lived in one. So we were already halfway there. But it still was a bit of a cultural shock as in new language and culture. We met and knew of plenty of new families trying to acclimatise but you are right, only a handful stuck it out.
