I know we are not an a position to go off-grid right now - 4 young children five and under, parents next door (whom we may be taking care of someday), a severe lack of 'handiness' and skill.
But none of these things prevent us from practicing homesteading where we are to a certain extent - we maintain our own garden and learn from our experiences, we cook our own food and do not go out to dinner too often. We learn from others how to fix and maintain things ourselves. We are trying to develop a homestead mindset, so someday if we are 'off the grid' we won't be completely caught flat-footed.
There would still be a huge culture shock... or rather lifestyle shock. Especially having to do with food. We really enjoy good food around here. Leeks and onions and flesh-pots and such. Oh how I'd rather live on Manna and water flowing from a rock. @ironshield
