The Three Roses

The Three Roses is a Czech folktale. There was a mother who had three daughters. There was going to be a market and she was going to go to it. Two daughters asked for a lot of stuff. The third daughter only asked for three roses. The mother bought all she could and headed home, but night fell before she got home.

She got lost, wandering in the dark forest. She was scared and tired. At last, she came to a palace. The mother picked the three roses her youngest daughter wanted from the palace's garden. A basilisk appeared and demanded her daughter in exchanged for the roses. Her threatened to kill her and so she had to give him her daughter.

This is a telling that is very similar to the Beauty and the Beast. Mary, the youngest daughter who had asked for the roses, said she understood and went to the palace. The basilisk told Mary she must hold him in her lap for three hours each day. On the third day, he brought a sword and told Mary to cut off his head. The serpent was revelled a prince and he and Mary were married.
