I used to work as a stevedore supervisor at Puerto Castilla, which is on the Caribbean coast of Honduras, there were literally millions of mosquitoes and sand flies there, you could feel the swarms of them as you walked. And I noticed that even though I was not completely free of them I was not as harrased as most other people, now I had malaria several times when I was in high school so I don't know if that made me a little immune to them, or maybe it is just the points you make above.
