The idea that we regularly need to do anything we don’t want to do is an illusion.
Break the mold.
See through the illusion.
We’re not here on this Earth to waste our lives away doing something that we don’t enjoy. Every. Single. Day.
We’re here to be happy. We here to in-joy life.
And we’re here to do whatever it is that we want to do.
And just what is that? Well, that’s your job to figure out.
And it might require a process.
Because when someone says, “Just spend this life doing whatever you want”, what comes to mind for many might be an exposé of hedonism: of drinking Coors Light, eating Papa John’s, and binge watching Netflix forever and ever.
And while there’s nothing wrong with these activities in and of themselves, typically what we’d find is that if such fleeting pleasures made up our entire lives, we’d become bored. We’d want something more. And that would be a marvelous place to come to, because that’s where we could begin to search in earnest for what makes us a tick on a far deeper level.
And so I’ll say it again: The idea that we regularly need to do anything we don’t want to do is an illusion. It’s a trap.
But what about the bills? Yes, it might require a transition away from current means of supporting yourself and into new ones, and so I don’t necessarily recommend quitting your job tomorrow and flying to Belize. But I do believe that when we find what makes us joyful and we live and embody that fully, that we will be taken care of. That everything will flow as it needs to, and that whatever resources we need, financial or otherwise, will be received when we need them.
And above all else, it’s a lifestyle and energy we’re seeking to live in, rather than that one specific thing that completes us.
And from this discovery, life will take care of itself because we’re happy and we can make decisions from joy, not fear.
So what is it that you want to do?
This is your one wild and precious life. How will you spend it? What will you be enjoying on a regular basis? What makes you smile and causes your eyes to light up with life? Do that! And do it often!
And you might not have an answer to all of these questions right now, and that’s fine. It’s perfectly normal in our culture really. But with our sights set on that goal, we can begin to break free from the illusion that this life is inherently comprised of struggle and strife. That we need to spend so much of our time doing stuff that we really don’t want to for one reason or another.
Today we have more material and food security than ever before in recorded history. And yet so much suffering is still everywhere. It’s time to take off the shackles, to set yourself free from the prison. It’s time to return to your joy.
