I'm sure that people have noticed that we weren't ordinary beggars. We only begged for food and not for money for instance! But I'm also sure that certain people didn't notice any difference, as we hadn't showered, shaven or changed clothes 5 days before the start as preparation.

But is this part of the religion? Is there a virtue in it that the religion requires of you?

I don't view meditation as a religion, more as a practice to improve oneself. Therefore no, I didn't feel any requirements from the practice. However I do know that monks practice begging and homelessless. But we were no monks, we were ordinary people :)
