Tierras Altas Organic Vegetable Market - Fun Friday by A Panama Mama

in #marketfriday7 years ago (edited)

Last week I showed you the tourist market in our little town and this week I'd like to show you the "organic" vegetable market. I'm not really sure how "organic" it is as I've heard they dust all the crops in Cerro Punta where these veggies come from, but I do know that all the broccoli, cauliflower, etc. have bugs on them. Does that make it organic? Ha!

This was taken after a trip to this market and another one a few months ago. All this for less than $15!

The market is run by a few gringos in the area at the local catholic church. The doors open at 11:30 and people are lined up waiting to get in. The door opens and off you go! You grab all you want of each produce and put it in the bags that you brought with you. Then you weigh it and write it on a clipboard.

Things are priced really well - that's the main reason we go! Potatoes are $.35 a pound, broccoli is something like $.45 a pound and carrots are around $.40 a pound I think. Those are the main veggies I go for!

There are all kinds of produce and sometimes they have something new. Purple cabbage, celery, onions, tomatoes, some herbs and beets are usually for sale. We enjoy going to this market and getting stocked up each week. I can usually leave with about 9-10 pounds of vegetables for less than $5.

We really enjoy getting out and going every week. This was the first time @captcryptoswife had gone to the organic vegetable market. Good fun!

The carrots look amazing! We tried growing out own here this summer and they came out like those baby carrots. That market really makes me miss the ones in Spain!

Good luck with the cooking! Any interesting regional fruit down there?

There are all kinds of interesting fruits. That would be a great blog post! :) There is ice cream fruit (not currently in season), mammon chinos (also called rambatans by the rest of the world), mangosteen...so many - but most of it I haven't seen recently - maybe not in season. :) Spain markets sound great. I loved Spain when I studied there one summer but didn't ever go to the market. It was like 20 years ago and such a lovely place. I bet it is so different now.

The markets were great. This time of year, though, I miss picking madroños. They're a small berry that ferments on the tree :)

Sounds really interesting!

That's a really cheap price for a lot of veggies! Looks like you got a great deal. They look delicious.

I like the price of pineapples on the street - $1 for a ripe one. Need to start getting one of those every day! Lots of great prices. Now if I could get my sweet potatoes I planted to produce, we'd be in business! ;)

Love that kind of market!! I totally would go! Thank you for sharing!!

It is nice and we enjoy going every week when we can make it. When we don't, I have to go to a little tienda and get our veggies at a little higher of a price and then I regret not going to this market. ;)

I bet!! It looks like a fun and a great deal at the same time. Hard to beat!

This is awesome and Wow! Can I come shopping with you? What a deal! Is this a local market run by gringos and the veggies grown by locals? How do the prices compare to the market from last week?

Just curious.

I hope you use a strategy and bring lots of people with you to get all your food in three minutes! :)

What a great time you must have scouring the awesome markets there! Thank you so much for sharing your life in Panama with us. Have a great weekend and go organic! Upped and steemed

Do they charge extra for the bugs? ;)

The food is grown by locals as far as I know, brought down on a truck and then the gringos lay it all out. We give a $.50 a week required donation to the church for allowing us to go there. I usually have my 5 kids with me. I don't know if that's a help or a hindrance most of the time. The older two can help me grab carrots and potatoes while I look at the other stuff. Last week, all the kids grabbed carrots. We had something like 20 of them...some of which we had to put back!! :) I hear there is a fruit market. I need to see if I can find it. The prices at this market are the lowest of all that I have seen. I wonder if they would be even cheaper if I went to the source! I bet so! The bugs are included free of charge. ;) If I don't clean the veggies soon enough, they'll chomp through and ruin some of them. Ah, the joys of living in Panama.

Indeed! With perks like that, how can anyone complain about lack of protein? Have a fabulous weekend!

You did an awesome work there. The pictures were neatly captured

Thanks! My 9 year old took a few of them. :)

Go healthy eat organic as they would say. Organic here are more expensive. How I wish we had a bigger yard and plant my own organic veggies.

I never ate organic in the US because it was so expensive.

Cool - that's so much more interesting than going to a standard Western supermarket!!
I love the idea of going and seeing what is there and then eating accordingly

Cheers

True and much cheaper too!

This was a cool post! It reminded me of being back home on Saipan, where we had our Sabalu market every Saturday (Sabalu/Sabado). I used to go there all the time to get fresh locally grown vegetables. I'm a firm supporter of local businesses over bigger corporate chains, because it is the local growers who truly put their time and energy and their LOVE into the food they grow. You can really taste the difference, in my opinion!

I totally understand that. We do a mix of local as well as chains around here, but for veggies, it is definitely local!

Love all the veggies! If it's MYR 15 for everything, yes that is super cheap... If it's USD 15, then after conversion to Malaysian Ringgit, it's still a little costly for us...

Now this is my kind of veggies! Plucked right from the ground. Take me with you @apanamamama!

Yep seriously right from the ground. Worms, dirt and all. Lol! ;)
