Women constructing their own shelter with grass stem and discarded relief aid sacks in Dikwa camp, established as a result of the insurgency in northeastern Nigeria.
The conflict in north-eastern Nigeria has destroyed infrastructure, provoked dramatic livelihoods erosion and triggered the displacement of over 2 million people. Some 1.4 million displaced persons currently in Borno State, where the humanitarian situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) is critical.
The majority of the State’s rural areas are empty, as the population has fled to the relative safety of Maiduguri (capital of Borno) or capitals of Local Government Areas (LGAs). While some areas have recently experienced returns in proximity of main roads, the population from many LGAs is likely to remain displaced for the medium term, lacking security, shelter and livelihoods in their current locations.
The vast majority do not have a shelter, often surviving in deplorable conditions
Among the most vulnerable are mothers and children in particular who are up against uniquely challenging odds - and they are growing increasingly desperate.
In a country where millions of people are hungry, you can also help tackle food insecurity and assist children who are at imminent risk of death from sever acute malnutrition and basic healthcare.
