What seems impossible in the past has become possible now. All developing countries should learn from this Indian feat. It takes a lot of skills, commitment , hard work , discipline etc to make this happen.
The entire project is 16.6 km long, out of which 10.8 km runs under the ground. Of this 10.8 km, 502 metres is under the water.
A giant tunnel-boring machine (TBM), was deployed to dig the underwater tunnel that runs a length of 502 meters under the river. The machine was brought from Herrenknecht AG plant in Schwanau, Germany.
There will be six air-conditioned coaches in the train and it will have a capacity of 1,000 passengers
The tunnel is being dug 30 metres below the riverbed. The project connects Howrah to the west and Salt lake to the east.
Digging this tunnel was the most difficult and critical task in the entire project.
The stretch of 16.6 km will have 12 stations, six of which will be under the ground, while the remaining six stations will be on elevated tracks.
Two top-order tunnel boring machines, nicknamed Rachna and Prerna, are digging India's first ever under-the-river Metro tunnels in Kolkata at full speed.
If all goes through, then one could take a Metro ride under the Hooghly river in December 2019.
Very very challenging Job. Great achievement in Indian conditions and The geological issues of Hoogly river bed.
Congrats to all the engineers & employess of Afcons Transtonnelstroy and Kolkata Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation Ltd for their remarkable achievement...!
