Facebook sent doctors to top hospitals to share patient data

Facebook hired doctors to visit top hospitals to with a proposal to share patient data in exchange for matching up data they collected to "help" hospitals find out what patients might need special treatment.

The project never made it far due to the publicity the Cambridge Analytica data leak created. As a result, many people are deleting their Facebook accounts or being more careful what data they share.

"This work has not progressed past the planning phase, and we have not received, shared, or analyzed anyone's data," a Facebook spokesperson

Data would be anonymous

Facebook claims they would collect the data anonymously and all personal information would be obscured in both directions. Information like name, social security number, and home address would be left out of the data transfer. You can be damn sure Facebook will attempt to link that data on their end, and there have been many studies in the past specifically related to de-anonymizing large data sets. With the amount of data Facebook has, it would have an easier time than most.

"The medical industry has long understood that there are general health benefits to having a close-knit circle of family and friends. But deeper research into this link is needed to help medical professionals develop specific treatment and intervention plans that take social connection into account."

"With this in mind, last year Facebook began discussions with leading medical institutions, including the American College of Cardiology and the Stanford University School of Medicine, to explore whether scientific research using anonymized Facebook data could help the medical community advance our understanding in this area. This work has not progressed past the planning phase, and we have not received, shared, or analyzed anyone's data."

"Last month we decided that we should pause these discussions so we can focus on other important work, including doing a better job of protecting people's data and being clearer with them about how that data is used in our products and services."

Not the first time

Although we can all agree that Facebook sucks, this isn't the first attempt to link patient records. Google has been trying to get medical records in the cloud for a while now with who knows what sort of integration with their other services.

In the past, Google attempted a "Google Health" program where users can volunteer health records to their cloud service but was discontinued in 2011.

The company is well connected to government, as well. I'd be interested to research the overlap of Facebook lobbyists with those of the healthcare industry.

They will be sorely missed...

What the deuce!! . Facebook is no longer just a social media platform .It's a business incubator run by governments and multi-billion dollar corporations to gather intelligence to influence any market of their choice for maximum financial gains. At this point I think Zuckerberg has lost control of FB, faceless individuals now control It .Mack is merely a figure head

That is very good idea ,am very happy that it is already happening

I believe that facebook will get in bigger trouble because facebook are Invading into peoples privacy.

Facebook is intruding on the data of people and not paying to the customers as well they way they need.

I always seem to take an opinion that there is a more sinister agenda afoot with this kind of news. Especially with big brother loving corps like FB..

I think they would like to link medical records, social habits and skills, and also, as we see more and more ads for, getting everyone's entire genome mapped and archived. All working in conjunction to completely map someone's "self".

No more freedom at that point. Genetic predispositions and the likes.. all able to be predicted. So they can weed out the weak..

Radical theory sure.. but seemingly more and more of a reality.

The internet is being weaponized in some ways... Psychological warfare.

This is discusting! Couldn't see any of this happening when I joined fb 10 years ago. Hopefully it's the case is not the same with this or other social medias although we can't imagine it yet..

This is terrible! :( I can't feel safe anymore using Facebok.

You had me at Facebook sucks.

Are they going in the right way? In my opinion, it will decrease the amount of Facebook users. What is your opinion about it?

Waiting for more information. Keep doing :)

Seems like a major lawsuit in the making using Hipaa laws. For a change, I hope there are hungry lawyers already circling this train wreck.

Upvoted and following , great content dude

ohhhh really, they just take all data but on the other hand user/customer not benefited much . in my opinion this decesion may be negative voted by users

A study of that magnitude would more than likely be beneficial to patients but it has to be done openly and with consent of all parties involved. There are a lot of people out in the world who like getting involved in projects like these there is no need for sneaking around sharing data unbeknownst.

Zuck-Dawg will be sweating buckets next week before congress, much to Steemit's delight!

Yesterday Facebook updated its "Product & Business Terms."

Presumably in preparation for next week's sweaty mess of a hearing so Zuckwit can point to "measures" they've taken to ensure user privacy.

Stay tuned everybody. This could be VERY entertaining!
