@steemed-open and I are loving island living here in Puerto Rico. Several of you have reached out to us with questions about our move and the island in general (the status of the hurricane recovery, nature of the tax incentives, crime, business environment, etc.). We prefer to answer those questions in a public forum so that everyone can learn and benefit.
So, feel free to ask any questions here and we’ll do our best to answer them.

Hiii friend @sean-king,
Here is my first ever Comment after following you. very nice to see your photography here in "Puerto Rico Island."are you peofessional photographer. impressive shots taken.Lively view of island.
I appreciated your work and my Support as my tiny UPVOTE for you.
really beautiful,
"Home is where the heart is" is not much different from "Paradise is where @steemed-open is", in this case.
Was in Puerto Rico some 20 years ago and it seemed pretty safe to me, as far as crime rate is concerned...
Since questions seem welcome, I'd like to know, if you already experienced any serious storms... are hurricanes an issue in your community?
Hurricane season officially ended November 30, so we don't have to worry much about that until next summer. So far we've had no major storms since we moved down in late December.
Ah, good :-) Storm is the weather I hate the most... when we were out in the submarine in my sailor days, and we had really bad weather we always felt sorry for the poor people on land ;-)
Stay safe! :-)
it would be of no use to ask whether you are a professional photographer...your pictures itself speaks the professionality...really amazing buddy:)
Thank you a bunch. I'm really not a pro, but I think I have a decent eye for composition, a great model/subject and pretty good post-processing capabilities. Best to you, and thanks for commenting.
Owk @sean-king my question is...
What's the crime rate in Puerto Rico like, is it like what we see in the movies? A friend of mine is planning to go on honey moon with his wife there but I have been discouraging him because I don't like what I see in the movies, the guns and all. So this is really timely as your response will determine his journey
thank you
Like most places, crime in Puerto Rico is really dependent upon your specific location. There are definitely areas to be avoided. However, if you're not involved in drug deals and you stick to the beaten path, crime in Puerto Rico is really quite manageable. Here's a comparison of crime rates (2014) between San Juan, Puerto Rico and some other similarly-sized metropolitan areas on the mainland: https://realestate.usnews.com/places/puerto-rico/san-juan/crime
There's been an understandable spike in crimes over the last 90 days post hurricane Maria, but I don't expect that to persist.
We walk around Condado of San Juan at night all the time and we've never felt unsafe.
I would like my girlfriend to be as opened to these types of pictures as your wife. <3
Yah, I'm a lucky man. My wife is both lovely and extremely self-aware. Lucky for us she's not reluctant to share her assets with the world.
itz really good dear.. i also wrote a blog on beauty you must visit it and i hope you will enjoy.

This is taken with a Nikon DSLR that's about 8 years old.
8 years is pretty old! You take very well care for it I guess!
Island life must be amazing!
Wow she is beautiful! And weather looks like heaven. I am new at steemit and trying to contribute with quality contents. I would appreciate it if you Check out my page
I like, because the island is not beautiful if there is no girl
@sean-king thanks for giving this opportunity to talk to you and ask questions.
My question goes this way: How's the business environment like in Puerto Rico? Is it conducive enough and what is the security situation there like?
I have a friend who wants to open up a business there while studying, so your reply will greatly help him.
Thank you
If you're looking to sell goods or services to locals here on the island, the business environment is challenging. Puerto Rico has essentially been in a depression since 2006. Last year it finished second (I think) to Venezuela as having the worst economic performance in the world (but that was at least in part thanks to Hurricane Maria, which pretty much shut the island down for a good 90 days). Unemployment and poverty are quite high.
However, if you're looking to live here and export goods or services from here to folks elsewhere (as I do), then the business opportunity is enormous. Good labor is plentiful and comparatively cheap, and there are some amazing tax incentives for businesses that relocate here. There's a vibrant and growing crypto community here.

OK. I'm very grateful that you took out time to reply. Thank you very much for the info
Great pic! Yeah, Not that I have questions, but I'd love to learn more through others and their questions with you two. Interesting post that I'll certainly keep up with.
Looking like a beautiful place to live. What is the average price of a house and what are the costs if living there?
The cost of living here is much higher than our old home (Knoxville, Tennessee) but mostly equal to or lower than similarly-sized metropolitan areas. Here's a comparison of the cost of living in San Juan versus Charlotte, NC: https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Puerto+Rico&city1=San+Juan&country2=United+States&city2=Charlotte%2C+NC
Real estate is really quite affordable. We bought an amazing property on the water in one of the nicest neighborhoods in San Juan and we paid a third of what we'd pay for a similar property in Miami.
Have property prices declined a lot further since the hurricane hit? I'm just wondering if there are some crazy deals at this point. There is always the worry of future hurricanes....etc
The island is very beautiful and amazing @sean-king, thanks my best friend has been sharing a very extraordinary post
It is a true Paradise. I feel the warmth of the sun on my skin when I see your photo. Looks like you enjoy life. This is a great solution. And to live, enjoying everything around. Have a nice day!
My question is how can I get that girl in the pictures Lol.
My real question is how much money cost to travel there severel weeks.
I guess it depends where you're traveling from. Round trip airline tickets from the US mainland run about $500 to $700 a piece. You should probably plan on at least $150/night for a hotel and another $30 to $100 per day per person for food (depending upon how often you each out and where you eat).
This picture is freaking awesome :)). I have a lot of questions about moving to the Caribbean! lol Have you guys planned it for a while? Do you have any friends there or you just liked the location? Was it easy to find the school that you liked for the kids? That's it for now, but I'm sure I'll have more!
We've planned the move since 2014. We spent the summer of 2014 here as a "test run" to see if we liked it and whether I could work effectively from here. We have virtually no friends here on the island, but we are quickly make new ones. It's a very friendly place! We are fortunate in that we could afford a private school, and it's been absolutely wonderful so far. Our daughter loves it. I can't really speak to the public school experience, however.
Oh I see - you’ve been planning it for a while! I’m sure you guys make friends quickly. :) Meanwhile, we’ll follow your sunny Caribbean posts and live vicariously through you :)). Who knows, maybe one day we’ll also make a leap!
Do Puerto Rican’s have a have a good life? What about poverty?
What are the requirements to move to Puerto Rico 100% legally?
When a hurricane hits, how do people protect themselves?
Anecdotally, Puerto Ricans are some of the happiest people we've ever met, even despite their relative poverty. They are friendly and never miss a chance to celebrate life. The do everything on "island time", so they’re much less focused on being productive and much more interested in enjoying life. Fortunately, given the weather and natural beauty of the place, it's possible to really enjoy life here even if you're relatively poor.
The requirements to move here depend upon where you’re moving from.
When hurricanes hit, people simply hunker down in their homes. The walls of most homes are made with reinforced concrete, so they can easily withstand the winds in most cases. The roofs, however, are a different matter. Many, many people lost their roofs to the winds.
There were very, very few casualties as a direct result of the hurricane force winds and immediate floods. Most loss of life resulted from the subsequent challenges (no electricity, bacterial infections, contaminated water, reduced access to medical care, etc.).
So sexy 😜😜
You mentioned tax incentives, how do taxes differ from the U.S. mainland?
You'll find a general explanation here: https://steemit.com/anarchocapitalism/@sean-king/i-m-moving-to-paradise-on-jan-1-to-legally-pay-no-tax-on-cryptocurrency-gains-true-story
Thank you so much, that was great information that I previously knew nothing about. It my be just what I need to convince my wife to move from dreary England (she is english and I'm american).
Thank you for the information . Nice share @sean-king
Actually my wife and i live in Izmir,Turkiye and it is hard to live in there too and of course we wonder about island living...Actually we wonder how we can reach there? it is the only real question that we ask ourselves and of course you if you have the answers...
Anyway we hope you write an article about it..I am a very successful photographer and I admire this. you are a successful model and you have a very good job :).meanwhile i am newcomer here and if you have time for it checking my works make me happy...Have nice day...
Awnnnnnn! I couldn't help shouting. You see, we need to harness the possibilities in our natural environment if we must reduce the level of natural disasters, truth is, 70 to 80% of natural disasters can be blamed on man's negligence of his environment.
This is a great lesson from nature, I must say Puerto Rico is incredibly wooow!
Gorgeous picture and gorgeous subject :)
What's the status of the recovery? Throughout last year and across the world, a big judge of our breakdancing events chose to stay home in Puerto Rico to help out. Always curious how it was like.
Great beach! I am one of the new steemit. I have shared photos taken by me. Also I want to contribute #goprophotography in steemit. You can check and maybe help me...
Putero Rico looks a beautiful island and i love to visit it.
