Applying the Rule of Thirds
Mastering the rule of thirds in photography takes time and practice. Though many people use the auto "rule of thirds" grid on smartphone cameras these days, I would suggest mastering it manually. It helps you take photos with both camera and smartphones more fluidly. The pictures will flow and you'll get better results investing time in your own skills.
When I took the image for the cover, I was purposely trying to get the 2 oysters in the right-side in both intersecting points. When I take photos of food, I like to get up close and personal with the dishes. I'll choose something that looks great in both tastes and in visual appeal in one of the four intersecting points.
In this shrimp vermicelli Pad Thai, there were super humungous shrimps so I used one as the main focus point. When I get close with food, I like to play with the approaching angles to the dish. Sometimes I'll go level and sometimes I'll come in from above like the oyster photo.
With this stir fry with an egg, I rotated my plate until both stir fry and egg were in the intersecting points. The more photos you take, the more you know going into the next photo. I've taken so many food photos while applying the rule of thirds that I knew the angles of the egg as soon as the server put the plate down.
I hope some of these examples of food photography helps you all brainstorm your next post. Photography is a beautiful journey so I hope everyone new to it, enjoy it to the highest possibilities.
