Definitely monthly maintenance required but it is not so bad. Checking electrolyte levels and topping off. The benefit of these is the low cost of ownership compared to sealed batteries.

Yeah, in a state of overcharge you can fry em up as they have gel inside which can't be checked due to being sealed. Unit cost may be close to flooded lead acid, you just don't have anyway to know the state of the inside of them.
