One of the big draws of pickleball is that it’s easier on the body compared to many other sports, especially tennis. The smaller court, lighter paddle, and slower ball speed make it a less intense workout, which is likely why it’s so popular among older adults. However, despite its low-impact reputation, I’ve started hearing from a number of friends who’ve picked up the game and are now dealing with injuries. It’s a good reminder that even seemingly low-risk activities can come with physical challenges.
For me, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve shied away from most contact sports to avoid the risk of injury. But I’m intrigued by pickleball and willing to give it a try. I’ve already purchased some beginner paddles and plan to hit the court in the coming weeks to see what all the hype is about. I hope it’ll be another tool in my fitness and health journey, offering me a fun way to stay active without too much strain.
In terms of its future, I’m curious to see whether pickleball can transition from a casual pastime into a more mainstream sport. Its rapid growth among recreational players is undeniable, but it hasn’t quite broken through at the professional level. That said, sports with broad grassroots support often have staying power, so I wouldn't be surprised if pickleball continues to rise in popularity.
Whether it's just a trend or something here for the long haul, I'm excited to give it a go and see how it fits into my routine. Let’s hope it turns out to be another fun way to stay active!

Long time tennis player who is a bit bummed to see more and more of my public court space getting covered to these punier pickleball courts. Sure the paddles don't need to be strung and the balls don't really go flat as quickly, but I miss something about the ping of a strung racquet and racing across the larger court. I fear I will soon have to bite the bullet on the transition to pickleball, as my one time tennis friends are moving over to the easier activity. At this rate, I'll soon be spending more time playing pickup soccer than pickup tennis. Oh well...
