"We just came back online, only to black out again..."
That's the sentence I wrote about 6-8 hours ago when I was originally trying to post this post. So what's going on with our blockchain @steemit?
We seem to be back online now, at least for the moment!
I am guessing that this problem has something to do with a bug inside of the code for hardfork 20. It would make sense to me, as more and more witnesses have been switching out the version they are running lately. This would mean that they have to roll back their servers to v19 before everything is back to normal.
I thought with the coders running stuff on testnets, and spending a TON of time before releasing a hardfork we would not have to run into stuff like the entire blockchain halting...
When writing a bit with @tobixen earlier today, he mentioned that the number of inactive witnesses on the Steem blockchain might play a part in why it has taken so long for us to get back online; that would make sense to me. Maybe its about time people change their witness votes, or vote in the first place...
You guys (@steemit, @ned) selling 800 000 Steem trough @alpha the other day does not really instill a sense of confidence for us investors in the middle of this latest shitstorm.
In my Blockfolio app on my phone today, Steem is the greenest crypto... The one that has been not working at all, all day. What a joke!
Here's a "few" of the errors I encountered throughout the day today:
I think the worst thing was that all interfaces were down. Even if no new blocks are produced, it ought to be possible to read old content.
Its weird to me that no site has chosen to make a offchain copy of all the posts regularly in case of stuff like this happening...
Do you have any clue what's going on? I'm extremely confused. I guess we were forking early?
If a majority of the witnesses makes the switch to version 20 early it's basically like we already have forked I believe. I think that's possibly what just happened and went wrong somehow.
It would be nice if we had some communication on here. The fork does change some things so it would have been nice to know we were forking early. The witnesses seem to not bother to communicate.
I found a few witnesses discussing the drama as it unfolded in discord chat groups, but thats the only place I was able to get any inside information at all yesterday.
The only external offical place I know of is @steemit's twitter profile. There they managed to be quite late in reporting about any problems at all, and when they first did it was rather diffuse...
The site smartsteem has recently stated this damage

Glad to see we're back online - albeit for now. It was a long wait but i'm sure everyone will be happy to be back.
Sure we are happy to be back, but how did this happen in the first place?
Good point. Likely we're seeing either hard fork 20 tests or just a little hiccup. Either way, less than 24 hours is a plus :)
For an oldtimer in this space like me; a blockchain stopping for even a few seconds is a pretty big deal. Stopping for half a day is quite unforgivable. I hope they atleast have learned something about how NOT to roll out new code...
Yeah, wow, what a day, yup.
You can say that again, crazy day O.O
