Today I want to share my very first experience in a butterfly house ! Yay !
A few months ago, I visited London for the first time, a lot of first time things in this trip. I stayed there for two weeks and I had a long To-do list to follow. I visited Museums, met new people, took long walks, relaxed in parks and took A LOT of pictures, however, to my mother’s dismay, most of them were not selfies, but photographs of everything I found beautiful or interesting. I wanted to immortalize the memories and emotions I had at certain moments in certain locations, and what’s better to do so other than taking pictures. Anyways, in the place I was staying in, I met a guy, he was nice and interesting, he spoke slowly but everything he said had a certain impact. I once asked him why he takes long to answer and he said it was he wanted whatever I said to sink in so he could better understand and give an appropriate answer. That was refreshing. We talked for a while and he asked me what I’v been up to, which places I went in and things like that, and being the nerd that I am, I told him I was planning to visit every museum in the city and that the next day I will continue my quest. He asked whether he can join me, so I accepted, I mean it’s better to visit new places with someone and share the good memories with. The next day, and with the help of Google Earth, we found our destination, The Science Museum, we were like two little kids in a candy factory. Fascinated by the past inventions, the pictures of the universe and the stories of astronauts, we had a blast.
After our not so short visit, we saw a butterfly house. I’ve read before about such places and I saw some videos online, but I have never visited one so I did not know what to expect. Being afraid of all types of insects, I was a little concerned but I didn’t know when will I have the chance to experience this again. I gave myself a small internal prep talk, gathered my courage and walked in. It was full of all kinds of people, young and old, children, couples and families. The second thing I noticed was the plants everywhere, I took my first steps in and finally saw my first butterfly.
It was flying above me but then landed on a plant next to me, It didn’t look afraid or startled after I got near it, I kept looking at it’s colourful wings and it kept doing its own thing – just standing there – not caring about the huge foreign thing ogling at it. I took some pictures of it and moved on, my friend was not as patient as me, so he already moved on to see other butterflies, I kept walking slowly, taking my time to look at each butterfly, when suddenly I saw a young woman looking at me and laughing discreetly, I was curious to know the reason for her behaviour and maybe my curiosity was apparent in my expression. She got closer, took another look at the top of my head and said “Looks like you have a fan! It’s been standing on the top of your head for awhile now” and then left. It was such a new experience.
Being this close to insects, surrounded by them and not being disgusted or afraid. I know they are butterflies, they are meant to be beautiful, but for a person like me who is normally more focused on how small they are, how many legs they have and the places they can hide in without me knowing. Fortunately, this one experience was magical. Like I mentioned before, I took many pictures so I will share some of them with you guys. I hope you enjoy them and hopefully the emotions I experienced in my little adventure would be conveyed to you!
