I always use http://steem.cool/ to check my reptuation and power! It's a clean UI that gives me a good idea of how my progress with reputation goes. It sort of visualizes reputation as if it were EXP in a video game. To check you just type the url then your username so mine is http://steem.cool/@scottcbusiness
You can see that I need 5 billion rep to get to the next level and it's visualized in the bar underneath my name. I think this is a great way to track your leveling. I'm not sure why it's so high (in billions) but I'd now like to explain why it matters and how to improve it.
Why Reputation Matters
Reputation first off is used to filter posts. If you have low reputation your posts will not show up in the feed unless people allow low rated posts to appear in their feed.
It doesn't directly affect anything outside of that, but it used mainly as a title and for proof of reliability/credibility
How To Earn More
The simplest way to explain it is simply as you earn votes, your reputation goes up. A way to help do this faster is to utilize upvote bots. This can help boost your visiblity, post engagement, and will up your reputation all the while. If you do this well tracking profit using a bot tracker you may be even able to make money on your upvote investments. Currently I use https://steembottracker.com/#bid

What more do you want to know? Reputation is a very basic concept. There is a technical explanation as to how it is exactly calculated but I am not well versed in it.
