I was also home-schooled, although without the nomad aspect that you enjoyed. My parents (who both hated school for different reasons) made the decision from the start not to send me or my two younger brothers to school. They also allowed us a lot of flexibility to discover and learn things for ourselves, so my experience might have been similar to yours in that respect.
I definitely agree with the main advantage you have stated. Home schooling in conjunction with the gentle, hands-off approach that my parents favoured definitely helped me learn to think for myself. I would even go so far to say that I've been able to surmount the few disadvantages of being home schooled thanks to my ability to approach problems in my own way and find an innovative solution.
I also agree with your part about learning at one's own pace. My youngest brother is dyslexic and had a lot of trouble learning to read in the beginning. If he had attended school, he would most likely have been put into a box that he would never have broken out of. Thanks to the plentiful time and support, he learned his own strategies for coping with the problem and was able to surmount the difficulties so successfully that nowadays it's almost as if they don't exist.
