The trend now in the NBA is to create a super team to win championships and most teams are doing all they can to create one. It’s hard to build a super team especially in small market cities because they will have a hard time luring superstar to play for them. Having a super team composing of at least 3 all-stars would have a good shot to contend but teams cannot put all the loads to those players. Every team has to have a good bench or second unit.
I think that’s a huge key to win championships. Look at Golden State now, they have the best starting 5 in the league but they are still losing because of their weak second unit. I think it’s important and teams must have a good second unit. Now, let’s take a look at the top benches in the NBA today.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics have one of the most loaded rosters in the league. And I think one of the best benches in the league as well. They have Gordon Hayward, Jaylen Brown, Terry Rozier, Aaron Baynes and Semi Ojeleye as their second unit. Look at how strong is that group of players. I’m sure Coach Brad Stevens is having a hard time fixing their rotations because of how stacked is the team. This second unit can easily be another team’s starting 5. And some of them sure is getting limited minutes which is not good.
Miami Heat
Miami’s bench is composed of Justice Winslow, Dwyane Wade, James Johnson, Dion Waiters and Bam Adebayo. The Heat is still in a position where they can reach the playoffs and this second unit is one of the reasons why they are still battling for a playoff spot. Winslow has high potential and I saw huge improvements from him this season.
Bam Adebayo I think will be their starting center in the future. He’s a great defender and can score inside. Johnson is a tough guy who can be a great scoring option, and D-Wade, you know him. You know what he can still do.
New York Knicks
New York is awful this year and they are sure to get a top 3 pick in the next NBA draft. A chance of getting Zion Williamson or RJ Barrett. But look at their roster, they have a very young core and a chance to get 2 max players. That’s a good opportunity for them and another great thing about this is their second unit. Emmanuel Mudiay, Allonzo Trier, Kevin Knox and Mitchell Robinson, this group is very young and talented.
Robinson has the potential to be a defensive player of the year caliber in the future. Knox can become a great wing player and Mudiay is showing a lot of his talents this season. I think the Knicks can use this group for the next years to come.
Los Angeles Clippers
The Clippers have Landry Shamet, Montrezl Harrell, Wilson Chandler, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and las but not the least, Lou Williams. Sweet Lou is the best player here and he is not a bench player caliber and I think he should be a starter. Harrell is a great paint scorer and his hustle and energy helps the team a lot. Gilgeous-Alexander is a promising rookie who is showing a lot this season. Doc Rivers has had a great second group here that’s why the Clippers are still in the playoff picture despite not having a superstar with them. I think, I will put the Clippers as the best bench in this discussion. Let’s see if the Clippers can make the playoffs with this group.

I enjoyed your article. The Clippers do have a very strong bench. Thanks for posting.
Also don't forget about Denver Nuggets. At the season's start they had a couple of injuries in their starting lineup and yet the team found a way to remain on top of the west. Denver has a very strong rotation with 8, 9 players and all in very good shape. Jokic, Murray, Millsap, Barton, etc.
For me this season west's final is going to be Denver-GSW
